Description
Transcendental pragmatics are defined by Karl–Otto Apel as the third paradigm of first philosophy. The first paradigm refers to the philosophy of being (Aristotle), the second paradigm to the philosophy of the subject (Kant), the third paradigm to the philosophy of intersubjectivity, or rather to the paradigm of discursive communication. The discourse, structurally interpreted as an ethical instance, becomes the place of foundation and legitimation of norms. Unlike relativistic approaches in philosophy, Apel's transcendental pragmatic ethics find their (ultimate) foundation in ethical discourse that structures the argumentation itself. Evidently, we are talking about intersubjective and discursive argumentation and not about an internal argumentation of the (Kantian) subject solus ipse.
