In this article I aim to unearth the expressive resources present in water-related popular protests, using as empirical records of such protests during the first decade of the XXI century in Cordoba, Argentina. The paper shows how the object of water-related protests was transformed from an initial approach centred on demands to “recover” the provision of networked water services that had been privatized in 1997, whereby the discussions emphasised the value of “the public”, to wider demands that included the definition of water as a natural, collective good that must be “defended”. Through the reconstruction of the episodes of mobilization during a cycles of protest during 2005-2007, the article discusses how the expressive forms, understood as communicative practices of the protest, were transformed in relation to the changes operated in the referential frameworks and population sensitivities connected with the character of water as a collective good.
