&lt;p&gt;A finales de diciembre del a&amp;ntilde;o 2019, una enfermedad de origen viral surgi&amp;oacute; en la ciudad de Wuhan en la provincia de Hubei (China), identificando por primera vez al agente pat&amp;oacute;geno por el m&amp;eacute;dico chino Li Wenliang, siendo nombrado por la Organizaci&amp;oacute;n Mundial de la Salud (OMS) como 2019-nCoV (SARS &amp;nbsp;coV-2; COVID-19).&amp;nbsp;&lt;br&gt;
&amp;nbsp;&lt;br&gt;
Desde el inicio de la pandemia, se ha observado mayor mortalidad despu&amp;eacute;s de que el COVID-19 llegara a Italia. En pa&amp;iacute;ses como China, Ir&amp;aacute;n, Estados Unidos y Corea del Sur la tasa de mortalidad global se cifra en el 9,2%, aunque con importantes variaciones en relaci&amp;oacute;n con la edad (en pacientes mayores de 65 a&amp;ntilde;os supera el 50%), el sexo (los varones asocian mayor mortalidad), la presencia de comorbilidades (enfermedades cardiovasculares, diabetes, enfermedades respiratorias, hipertensi&amp;oacute;n), el h&amp;aacute;bito tab&amp;aacute;quico, la coinfecci&amp;oacute;n con otros pat&amp;oacute;genos y los pacientes en protocolos terap&amp;eacute;uticos; sin embargo, llama la atenci&amp;oacute;n que la letalidad debida a la infecci&amp;oacute;n por COVID-19 es menos frecuente o quiz&amp;aacute; menos agresiva en pacientes pedi&amp;aacute;tricos y adolescentes, sin que hasta ahora se sepa porqu&amp;eacute;.&amp;nbsp;&lt;br&gt;

Si bien se han propuesto algunas teor&amp;iacute;as con enfoques inmunol&amp;oacute;gicos, en este trabajo se presenta la hip&amp;oacute;tesis que engloba la funci&amp;oacute;n del timo como un posible &amp;oacute;rgano protector ante la infecci&amp;oacute;n por COVID-19, explicando de esta forma el comportamiento epidemiol&amp;oacute;gico de esta pandemia en la poblaci&amp;oacute;n pedi&amp;aacute;trica.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;ABSTRACT&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In late December 2019, a disease of viral origin emerged in the city of Wuhan in the province of Hubei (China), the pathogen was identified for the first time by the Chinese doctor Li Wenliang, being named by the World Organization for the Health (WHO) as 2019-nCoV (SARS coV-2; COVID-19).&amp;nbsp;&lt;br&gt;
&amp;nbsp;&lt;br&gt;
Since the beginning of the pandemia, more deaths have been observed since Italy was infected by the COVID-19. In countries such as China, Iran, the United States and South Korea, the global mortality rate is 9.2%, though with significant variations in relation to age (in patients over 65 years-old it exceeds 50%), the sex (males associate higher mortality), the presence of comorbidities (cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, respiratory diseases, hypertension), smoking, coinfection with other pathogens and in patients on therapeutic protocols; however, it draws attention that the fatality of COVID-19&amp;rsquo;s infection is less frequent &amp;nbsp;or less prone to be spreaded to or maybe less aggressive towards pediatric and adolescent patients, until now it is not known why.&amp;nbsp;&lt;br&gt;
&amp;nbsp;&lt;br&gt;
While some theories have been proposed with immunological approaches, this work presents the hypothesis that includes the function of the thymus as a possible protective organ against COVID-19 infection, thus explaining the epidemiological behavior of this pandemic in the pediatric population.&lt;/p&gt;</description>
