Online Estimation of Cable Harmonic Impedance in Low-Voltage Distribution Systems

A theoretical derivation<br>\nof resistance and reactance for harmonic frequencies is not<br>\nsufficient as it neglects operating conditions of cables as well<br>\nas their configuration and actual installation pattern. In this<br>\npaper, a noninvasive procedure for estimating parameters of the<br>\nlow-voltage cable is proposed. On contrary to invasive methods,<br>\nthe proposed technique does not require any external sources<br>\nof harmonic excitation, and consequently, it does not introduce<br>\nadditional disturbances to the system. A disconnection of the<br>\ncable is not required as the procedure meant to be performed<br>\nonline. The methodology employs natural variations of harmonic<br>\ncurrents and voltages; however, the impedance angle is preserved<br>\ndue to the utilization of synchronized measurement samples. The<br>\ndeveloped signal processing algorithm provides noise reduction<br>\ncapabilities and smoothing of the output in presence of fluctuating<br>\nharmonics. In addition, an attention is given to the metrological<br>\ncharacterization of the measurement system and evaluation of<br>\nuncertainty of impedance values. The results of the laboratory<br>\nexperiment indicate that for selective harmonics the variations<br>\nof impedance estimates are no more than 10 mOhm, which is in the<br>\nrange of calculated uncertainty values. The practical applicability<br>\nof the method is discussed together with its limitations.</p>",
