The aim of this essay is to address the advance of poverty and social inequality in the world, and in particular in the Latin American region, arising from the effects of the Covid-19 crisis, in the face of new debates of the Social Welfare State. The global crisis caused by the new coronavirus pandemic will drive millions of people into poverty and should leave a greater trail in social inequality. Given that in order to contain the advance of the pandemic, governments have adopted policies of social isolation, which has consequently triggered the paralysis of global economic activities. These measures have favored the weakening of global supply chains, creating impacts between supply and demand, which in turn have generated uncertainties about income and employment. As a result, world economies are vulnerable to the advance of poverty, significantly increasing differences in social classes, especially in developing countries.
