<p>This paper addresses the classic problem of vowel alternation in the English lexicon.</p>
<p>It argues that, at least for the Latinate portion of the grammar, this alternation might be better regarded as determined by a constraint-based lengthening process rather than shortening, as is traditionally assumed.</p>
