Description
The data relate to the repository of the Berlin Ancient Sundials Project
(http://repository.edition-topoi.org/collection/BSDP). The data combine the type of decoration with a
corresponding position on the surface of the sundial's corpus, as well as to
make the results searchable and computationally accessible. Due to the different
shapes of the sundials - or "corpus types" - the classification was simplified
ten categories to fit the maximum number of sundials. These are frontUp,
frontLow, front, sides, back, base, intersection, limbus, legs; an additional
section gives details on specific parts of the body, coloration, or finding
context. Only clearly visible decorative elements are recorded. A record
without an entry for an object is not necessarily plain/undecorated but could
have been unable to be assessed due to other reasons, e.g., the lack of image
resources.
