It is a qualitative character study, exploratory and descriptive. The objective was to understand the role of nursing staff in the conduct of skin contact in the first half hour of the newborn (NB) life for the women interned in a maternity unit of a university hospital in the south of the RS .We used an instrument with semi-structured question, descriptive from 11 postpartum women who participated in the study between August and September in 2011. It was evidenced in this research that the practice of breastfeeding as early as possible facilitates mother-infant bond. Also it was possible to know the satisfaction level of the women, being a useful tool for nursing staff in the implementation of a service focused on the needs of mothers.
