<p>This article aims to analyze the reception of Jos&eacute; Ign&aacute;cio de Abreu e Lima (1794-1869) in the History of Brazilian Literature. This was general of Sim&oacute;n Bol&iacute;var (1767-1830) and had outstanding contribution in the nascent Brazilian literary historiography, with essays that denote both as historical synthesis as declarations of constitution of a literature for the country. In analyzing the main historiographical books inscribed in the area of Brazilian Literature, we observe the disparity in critics&rsquo; approaches to the contribution of this nineteenth-century intellectual. We can conclude that critics have tried to include it in two categories: 1) for S&iacute;lvio Romero and Jos&eacute; Ver&iacute;ssimo, Abreu e Lima would be linked to the nineteenth-century category of &ldquo;publicists and speakers&rdquo;; 2) Later, Nelson Werneck Sodr&eacute; integrates the writer&rsquo;s name into literary historiography. From this, thinking about their contribution in the discussions about the formation of the historiography of the field, Ant&ocirc;nio Candido, Alfredo Bosi and Roberto Ac&iacute;zelo de Sousa reiterate the presence of Abreu e Lima in the last category.&nbsp;</p></subfield>
