"abstract": "
\n\n
This article aims to analyze the reception of José Ignácio de Abreu e Lima (1794-1869) in the History of Brazilian Literature. This was general of Simón Bolívar (1767-1830) and had outstanding contribution in the nascent Brazilian literary historiography, with essays that denote both as historical synthesis as declarations of constitution of a literature for the country. In analyzing the main historiographical books inscribed in the area of Brazilian Literature, we observe the disparity in critics’ approaches to the contribution of this nineteenth-century intellectual. We can conclude that critics have tried to include it in two categories: 1) for Sílvio Romero and José Veríssimo, Abreu e Lima would be linked to the nineteenth-century category of “publicists and speakers”; 2) Later, Nelson Werneck Sodré integrates the writer’s name into literary historiography. From this, thinking about their contribution in the discussions about the formation of the historiography of the field, Antônio Candido, Alfredo Bosi and Roberto Acízelo de Sousa reiterate the presence of Abreu e Lima in the last category.
",
