The physiologist Zwaardemaker (1857-1930) conducted extensive research into the relationship between radioactivity and the functioning of the heart, later in a broader sense also called bioradioactivity. For 15 years, from 1915 until his death in 1930, Zwaardemaker worked on this project and about 25 dissertations were devoted to it. The very extensive research project ended abruptly at his death. What exactly did the investigation entail and why was it not continued?
