As a result, the required larger fractional bandwidths of cryogenic IF amplifiers impose a trade-off between their noise temperature and input reflection matching.\nCryogenic isolators have so far been employed in all European bands of ALMA. However, ferrite isolators are already reaching their limits in terms of fractional bandwidth and further degrade the noise temperature at the edge of the band. \nBalanced amplifier on the other hand are implemented in some prototype radio astronomical receivers and have the great advantage of providing larger fractional bandwidth with better overall noise performance than with an input isolator.\nAt the workshop, we shall present the results of the latest development in terms of cryogenic balanced amplifiers for SIS receivers with enhanced IF bandwidth and the resulting performance of wideband prototypes receivers operating at 300 GHz.", "publication_date": "2019-06-06", "publisher": "Zenodo", "resource_type": { "id": "presentation", "title": { "de": "Pr\u00e4sentation", "en": "Presentation" } }, "rights": [ { "description": { "en": "The Creative Commons Attribution license allows re-distribution and re-use of a licensed work on the condition that the creator is appropriately credited." }, "icon": "cc-by-icon", "id": "cc-by-4.0", "props": { "scheme": "spdx", "url": "https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode" }, "title": { "en": "Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International" } } ], "title": "Wideband Balanced Amplifier for Future ALMA Wideband Receivers" }, "parent": { "access": { "owned_by": { "user": 19278 } }, "communities": { "default": "dd9ed5d7-65d2-40a7-b879-584451a421e3", "entries": [ { "access": { "member_policy": "open", "members_visibility": "public", "record_policy": "open", "review_policy": "open", "visibility": "public" }, "children": { "allow": false }, "created": "2019-06-06T07:20:38.066398+00:00", "custom_fields": {}, "deletion_status": { "is_deleted": false, "status": "P" }, "id": "dd9ed5d7-65d2-40a7-b879-584451a421e3", "links": {}, "metadata": { "curation_policy": "", "page": "
ALMA Development Workshop, 3 - 5 June, 2019 at ESO Garching, Germany
\r\nhttp://www.eso.org/sci/meetings/2019/ALMADevel2019.html
The Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) is the world’s most sensitive facility for millimeter/submillimeter astronomical observations, and will soon be fully operational in all of the originally planned bands. Since its first observations, ALMA has routinely delivered groundbreaking scientific results that span nearly all areas of astrophysics.
\r\n\r\nIn order to keep ALMA at the forefront of technology, all ALMA partners have a continuous development programme. ESO strives to closely involve the member state institutes in this programme by issuing calls for development studies every three years (see the ALMA European Development webpage).
\r\n\r\nSimilar calls for North American studies are issued on a yearly basis.
\r\n\r\nThe next European call is expected to be issued in 2019. To optimally develop the ideas for new studies – especially in the context of the ALMA Development Roadmap, ESO is organizing a workshop in Garching from 3-5 June 2019. This build on the on the success of the 2016 ALMA Developers’ Workshop.
\r\n\r\nAlthough the main goal will be how best to realize the goals of the ALMA 2030 Development Roadmap, we aim to provide a complete overview of all ongoing and planned development studies in all ALMA partners.
