Annotation for dataset of publication [Abstract] The dataset contains concentrations profiles of 217 agricultural pesticides in surface water samples. Five small streams in Switzerland were sampled from the beginning of March to mid October 2017 using 3.5 day composite samples resulting in 61 to 66 measured samples per site and a total of 313 samples. Studies using the data and describing the methods: + Spycher et al., 2019: Aqua & Gas, 4 (in press) [Dataset Organization] There are two comma-separated text-files both in long-format (one concentration measurement per row): + NAWA_Spez_2017_original_samples.csv: measurements of the original samples + NAWA_Spez_2017_time_weighted_averages_each_halfweek.csv: measured and calculated 14d average concentrations for each 3.5-day time step of the sampling campaign for the 145 detected plant protection products. Periods with missing samples (occurred in Chrümmlisbach, Le Bainoz and Weierbach) are also reported, but all variables are set to NA apart from the compound identifiers (Name and CAS) and the half-week identifier (ID.halfweek and Starting_Date_CET) [Scientific Context] The goal of the study was to measure comprehensive list of plant protection products over a full growing season. A temporal resolution of half a week (3.5 days) was chosen which is a time period getting close to the duration of acute toxicity tests. All details on sampling, analytical methods and data evaluation are given in the methods section of the publication. + There are 11 variables in NAWA_Spez_2017_original_samples.csv (217 cpds x 313 Sample IDs = 67'921 rows) - Sample_ID: ID of sample in chronological order. First digit indicates stream (1: Chrümmlisbach, 2: Weierbach, 3: Le Bainoz, 4: Hoobach, 5: Eschelisbach) - Samplename_measured_sample: Sample name of measured sample. Both Sample_ID and Samplename_measured_sample are unique for a given compound and have 313 different values. Samples BE0B0C, BE0102, BE0304 and SH0708 consist of two 3.5 d composite samples and are thus 7d composite samples - Stream: Name of five small streams of monitoring campaign - Date_Begin_CET: Begin of 3.5 d composite sample (time given as Central European Time during daylight saving time, i.e. UTC + 2 h) - Date_End_CET: End of 3.5 d composite sample (time given as Central European Time during daylight saving time, i.e. UTC + 2 h) - Name: Name of compound - CAS-Number: CAS-Number of compound - Concentration_ng_L: Concentration of compound [ng/L]. Concentrations < LOQ are denoted with < LOQ at the corresponding site and the corresponding measurement sequence. - LOQ_ng_L: LOQ of compound [ng/L]. Specific for site and measurement run (potentially 7 different LOQs) - Legal_Status_2017: Legal status at the beginning of 2017. B: Registered as biocide, P: Registered PPP-Products according to website of Swiss Federal Office of Agriculture, X: Previously registered as either biocide (BX) or plant protection product (PX), TA: Registered as veterinary drug, Bau: Used in building material (only Mecoprop) - Type: Type of pesticide, i.e. F: Fungicide, H: Herbicide, H(S): Herbicide Safener, I: Insecticide, M: Molluscicide, PGR: Plant Growth Regulator, Rod: Rodenticide, Syn: Synergist + There are 15 variables in NAWA_Spez_2017_time_weighted_averages_each_3.5_days.csv.csv (145 cpds x 326 ID.halfweek = 47'270 rows) - ID.halfweek: ID of half-week from first half-week of campaign to last half-week. First two letters indicate canton of stream (BE: Chrümmlisbach, BL: Weierbach, FR: Le Bainoz, SH: Hoobach, TG: Eschelisbach) and digits indicate start of sample (in Excel-Format). - Samplename_measured_sample: See above. Samples BE0B0C, BE0102, BE0304 and SH0708 occur two times now as half-week time steps are used over full measurement period - Stream: Name of five small streams of monitoring campaign. - Starting_Date_CET: Date and time at beginning of half-week sample (time given as Central European Time during daylight saving time, i.e. UTC + 2 h) - Name: Name of compound - CAS-Number: CAS-Number of compound - Legal_Status_2017: Legal status at the beginning of 2017. F: Fungicide, H: Herbicide, H(S): Herbicide Safener, I: Insecticide, M: Molluscicide, PGR: Plant Growth Regulator, Rod: Rodenticide, Syn: Synergist - Original_Concentration_ng_L: Concentration of compound at given half-week [ng/L]. Concentrations < LOQ are denoted with < LOQ - LOQ_ng_L: LOQ of compound [ng/L]. Specific for site and measurement sequence - C_twa_14d_start_at_1: 14d-time weighted average concentration calculated by starting with first half-week sample of campaign. Missing samples omitted and as a consequence C_twa consists of less than 4 half-week samples. This also applies to variables C_twa_14d_start_at_2, C_twa_14d_start_at_3, C_twa_14d_start_at_4 and C_twa_14d_start_of_biotests - C_twa_14d_start_at_2: Analogous to C_twa_14d_start_at_1, but calculation starts at 2nd half-week sample - C_twa_14d_start_at_3: Analogous to C_twa_14d_start_at_1, but calculation starts at 3rd half-week sample - C_twa_14d_start_at_4: Analogous to C_twa_14d_start_at_1, but calculation starts at 4th half-week sample - C_twa_14d_start_of_biotests: Starting time identical to starting time of biotests (cf. Publication of Langer et al. 2019, Aqua & Gas(4) (in press). The starting time varies between sites: Chrümmlisbach (3rd sample), Weierbach (4th sample), Le Bainoz (1st sample), Hoobach (1st sample), Eschelisbach (1st sample) [Citation] Spycher et al. 2019, Anhaltend hohe PSM-Belastung in Bächen, Aqua & Gas, 4 (in press) [DOI this dataset] https://doi.org/10.25678/0000gg Questions: simon_lukas.spycher@alumni.ethz.ch, heinz.singer@eawag.ch
