In 1545 Bernardino Tomitano published the Ragionamenti della lingua toscana, a dialogue that collects the conversations in Sperone Speroni’s house after his election at the Accademia degli Infiammati. The focus of the discussion is the relation between philosophical and literary knowledge. This paper emphasizes the ways in which the mid-sixteenth-century Paduan culture conceived and promoted the cognitive and civil value of the vernacular rhetoric and oratory.
