Cloud RAN (CRAN) is envisioned to provide great flexibil-
ity and re-usability of not only radio resources such as frequency spec-
trum but also processing capability and storage in an efficient and most cost-effective manner. This makes CRAN a perfect candidate for smart city solutions where radio and processing resources for various types of communications shall have to be rented out for specific durations of times. This paper presents a network slice based CRAN architecture for smart cities which makes use of the edge cloud computing and front-end computing to fulfill the needs of various types of communications, i.e., low latency and high throughput. Furthermore, this paper highlights the challenges and solution in addressing these low latency, high throughput requirements.
