Geolocation is an important piece of information that makes it possible to facilitate both search/retrieval and exploration of cultural heritage content. The majority of heritage metadata contains some form of implicit or explicit geographical reference but more commonly than coordinates are indirect textual or formal references such as addresses or geographical names. In order to achieve the full benefits of spatial metadata it is necessary to have access to map coordinates that can be used to visualize the location of a resource on a map – or that may be used to infer meaningful relationships between two or more resources based on the proximity of their spatial metadata. This deliverable, the LoCloud Geolocation Enrichment Services addresses this weakness in existing
cultural heritage data and introduces two different interoperable tools to facilitate enrichment of existing cultural heritage metadata as well as enabling geographical names resolution into coordinates from literally any third-‐party application through a geolocation API.
LoCloud was funded by the European Commission's ICT Policy Support Programme. Grant Agreement number: 325099
