  • 1. Utrecht University

Description

This report documents the first workshop of the research project "A Million Pictures: Magic Lantern Slide Heritage as Artefacts in the Common European History of Learning" (1 June 2015 - 31 May 2018). Workshop 1 was held from 3-5 September 2015 in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

As the "Million Pictures" Project was the first international research project on lantern slides, the workshop reports provide reference about the state of research at a given moment. This report gives a detailed summary of the discussion about the requirements for a useful documentation of lantern slides from the perspective of various stakeholders: people from heritage institutions, from various disciplines in the humanities, artists and private collectors.

The abstracts of the presentations (starting page 20) provide an overview over research initiatives on the magic lantern until 2015 as well as research questions and experienced difficulties.
