    <description descriptionType="Abstract">&lt;p&gt;In the ThermoDrill project, an&amp;nbsp;interdisciplinary team of experts from&amp;nbsp;research and industry has set itself the&amp;nbsp;ambitious goal of developing a fast and&amp;nbsp;cost-efficient drilling system based on an&amp;nbsp;innovative combination of conventional&amp;nbsp;rotary drilling and water jetting. The&amp;nbsp;new technology will afford at least a&amp;nbsp;100% increase in the rate of penetration&amp;nbsp;in hard rock, and an associated cost&amp;nbsp;reduction of more than 30%.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The ThermoDrill consortium addressed&amp;nbsp;the following research and development&amp;nbsp;topics in order to achieve these goals: Revolutionary&amp;nbsp;and breakthrough&amp;nbsp;drilling technology, &amp;nbsp;Unique drill&amp;nbsp;bit prototype, &amp;nbsp;Novel drilling fluid tailored&amp;nbsp;o the new drilling&amp;nbsp;technology, &amp;nbsp;Simulations and&amp;nbsp;experiments.&lt;/p&gt;</description>
