Description

The article deals with studying poetic language in terms of the ideas expressed in the linguistic theory, established by O. Potebnia in his time and then developed and expanded by representatives of the Kharkiv philological (linguistic) tradition, in both diachronic and synchronic aspects. The author’s reflection is focused on the following issues concerning the functioning of poetic words: context (where the word’s poetic meaning is formed), word imagery (as the ability of its semantic potential to create polysemy), interpretation (decoding) of poetic words’ meanings (as an individual mental activity of the recipient of an artistic text). The illustrative material used in the present research is Serhii Zhadan’s poem «Touch as though you touch the book» which is notable for its metalogical narrative
and linguistic metaphorics. Using the example of the original «body is a book» metaphor, its contextual artistic expression, realization of the metaphoric meaning by means of tropes as well as interpretation of its meaning in the aspect of embodiment theory were studied.
