A 5-h evening exposure to a white LED-\nbacklit screen with more than twice as much 464 nm light emission\n{irradiance of 0,241 Watt/(steradian\n\nm\n2\n) [W/(sr\n\nm\n2\n)], 2.1\n\n10\n13\nphotons/(cm\n2\n\ns), in the wavelength range of 454 and 474 nm} than\na white non-LED-backlit screen [irradiance of 0,099 W/(sr\n\nm\n2\n),\n0.7\n\n10\n13\nphotons/(cm\n2\n\ns), in the wavelength range of 454 and\n474 nm] elicited a significant suppression of the evening rise in\nendogenous melatonin and subjective as well as objective sleepiness,\nas indexed by a reduced incidence of slow eye movements and EEG\nlow-frequency activity (1\u20137 Hz) in frontal brain regions. Concomi-\ntantly, sustained attention, as determined by the GO/NOGO task;\nworking memory/attention, as assessed by \"explicit timing\"; and\ndeclarative memory performance in a word-learning paradigm were\nsignificantly enhanced in the LED-backlit screen compared with the\nnon-LED condition. Screen quality and visual comfort were rated the\nsame in both screen conditions, whereas the non-LED screen tended\nto be considered brighter. Our data indicate that the spectral profile of\nlight emitted by computer screens impacts on circadian physiology,\nalertness, and cognitive performance levels. The challenge will be to\ndesign a computer screen with a spectral profile that can be individ-\nually programmed to add timed, essential light information to the\ncircadian system in humans.",
