Synesthetic Sound-Color Correlations of Alphabetic Letters and Words

Elivanova Maria; Semushina Valeria

The article is concerned with investigating the problem of synesthesia, that manifests itself in the fact that stimulation in one sensory or cognitive system leads to automatic involuntary reaction in another one. So, perception of hearing sounds, words of the first or foreign language can stimulate some people to color (as variants also taste or olfactory etc.) sensations. We describe variants of true sinesthets’ reactions to stimulus presentation (sounds / letters and words of different semantic group). We attempt to create possible typology of phonemic and verbal sinesthets. Factors that can affect the color sensation when perceiving linguistic units of different levels are described.
