The overall aim of the UNITI project is to develop a decision support system (DSS) to address the question which treatment approach is optimal for a specific patient. Clinical, epidemiological, medical, genetic and audiological data, including signals reflecting ear-brain communication, shall be analyzed by computational models to extract those factors that are of prognostic relevance.

An important step towards this goal is to build ensemble mechanisms that combine the computational models derived from the clinic-specific data and develop a voting scheme that takes into account the distribution of the phenotypes and allows to predict the medical outcome as well as the adherence to the clinical intervention.

This deliverable will report on the currently developed data models on phenotypes, predictors and adherence which are the basis for the voting scheme. A large variety of data models has been applied and compared.

In science, gender equity leaves a remaining issue. The UNESCO Institute for Statistics identified that less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women1. In (South-Eastern) Europe, only 4 out of 41 countries achieved gender parity. In 2021/22, around two thirds of medical students in Germany were women.2 Unfortunately, no figures could be found across Europe, but one can assume that the proportion of women among medical students is also higher across Europe than that of men. Yet women are (or seem) still underrepresented in research.3 This deliverable will provide gender-distributed data on the project workforce, on the impact of the working environment and on the career and professional mobility.

This document summarizes the current recruitment progress at half time of the UNITI Randomized Clinical Trial (RCT), which is conducted within the work package 7 of the proposal.
Over the course of the UNITI-RCT a 12-week treatment trial for chronic tinnitus patients using 4 different types of interventions (hearing aids, sound therapy, structured counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy) either as a single treatment or a combination of two treatments is performed. The RCT is harmonized over five clinical centers across the EU and aims to investigate 500 tinnitus patients.

Within this Task, the legal and ethical issues throughout the whole duration of the project will be monitored. In addition, a data privacy framework will be developed, that covers the internal processing of personal data within the project, including ethical and legal aspects. In the following we will describe the Informed Consent Procedures, the techniques of anonymisation and pseudonymisation, the lawful use of sensitive health-related data, the rules of secure data transfer within the UNITI Consortium, the accordance with GDPR, the feedback process to individuals, regulatory issues and related EU as well as national legislation and the collecting and shipping procedures.

mHealth applications allow for real-time data recording, which can provide valuable insights into treatment processes. However, as such applications rely on voluntary usage, the generated datasets are highly susceptible to fluctuating engagement and high user dropout rates. This poses challenges when applying machine learning techniques to the data. Moreover, in order to design measures that promote patient engagement with mHealth apps, it is necessary to predict and understand decline in engagement.

The current document is the main outcome of UNITI "Task 3.5 Health socio-economic impact model and analysis". As a consequence, in this study we tried to calculate the socio-economic costs of tinnitus and estimate the socio-economic value of the UNITI treatments and interventions. Therefore, the overall objective was the generation of improved knowledge that will lead to better diagnostic predictions that can potentially lead to reduced costs and improve life-expectance.

This document reports on the results of Task 3.5. A systematic literature review on the healthcare and societal costs of tinnitus was completed and already published. The results of this review were used to design a questionnaire for an empirical evaluation with the participants in the UNITI randomized controlled trial (RCT). The results are reported here and are currently submitted to a peer-reviewed journal.
