<p>The Ice Sheet Model Intercomparison Project for CMIP6 (ISMIP6) brings together a consortium of international ice-sheet and climate modellers to simulate the contribution from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets to future sea-level rise. In this document, we describe the set-up and main results of the ISMIP6 Antarctica Tier-1 and Tier-2 experiments carried out with the ice-sheet model SICOPOLIS.</p>

<p>SICOPOLIS-AD is a version of the ice sheet model SICOPOLIS (SImulation COde for POLythermal Ice Sheets, <a href="https://www.sicopolis.net">https://www.sicopolis.net</a>) that enables adjoint code generation via source transformation using the open-source algorithmic differentiation (AD) tool Tapenade. It can be used to assess the sensitivity of some quantity of interest (e.g., the volume of the Greenland ice sheet) to perturbations in variables that may affect that quantity of interest (e.g., the surface temperature at each point on the ice sheet).</p>

<p>The Ice Sheet Model Intercomparison Project for CMIP6 (ISMIP6) brings together a consortium of international ice-sheet and climate modellers to simulate the contribution from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets to future sea-level rise. In this document, we describe the set-up and main results of the ISMIP6 Greenland Tier-1 and Tier-2 experiments carried out with the ice-sheet model SICOPOLIS.</p>

<p><strong>Summary.</strong> Ice sheets (with their attached ice shelves), ice caps and glaciers are active, dynamic components of the climate system of the Earth. As a common feature, these ice bodies show gravity-driven creep flow ("glacial flow"), sustained by the underlying land. This leads to thinning and horizontal spreading, which is essentially compensated by snow accumulation in the higher (interior) areas and melting and calving in the lower (marginal) areas. Any imbalance of this dynamic equilibrium leads to either growing or shrinking ice masses. In this tutorial, we will first review the underlying field theories of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics. Basic concepts are the tensorial measures for stress and strain, and the balance equations for mass, momentum and energy. We will then discuss the material (rheological) properties of polycrystalline ice, which are expressed by Glen's flow law (or variations thereof), Fourier's law of heat conduction and a caloric equation of state. Combining the balance and material equations leads to the field equations for the flow of ice sheets, ice shelves, ice caps and glaciers, which must be complemented by suitable boundary conditions. We will treat a hierarchy of simplifications of the field equations, from the most sophisticated full Stokes formulation to the most simplified shallow-ice and shallow-shelf approximations. Analytical solutions only exist for highly simplified problems, while in general numerical solution techniques must be applied. We will present some examples of numerical solutions for selected problems of ice sheet and glacier flow.</p>

<p>SICOPOLIS-AD is a version of the ice sheet model SICOPOLIS (SImulation COde for POLythermal Ice Sheets, <a href="https://www.sicopolis.net">https://www.sicopolis.net</a>) that enables adjoint code generation via source transformation using the open-source algorithmic differentiation (AD) tool OpenAD. It can be used to assess the sensitivity of some quantity of interest (e.g., the volume of the Greenland ice sheet) to perturbations in variables that may affect that quantity of interest (e.g., the surface temperature at each point on the ice sheet).</p>

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> The Ice Sheet Model Intercomparison Project for CMIP6 (ISMIP6) brings together a consortium of international ice sheet and climate models to explore the contribution from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets to future sea level rise. For such projections, initialisations are required that provide initial states of the respective ice sheet. InitMIP-Antarctica is an early initiative within ISMIP6 in order to explore this issue for the Antarctic ice sheet across a variety of models and initialisation techniques. We contribute to InitMIP-Antarctica with the ice sheet model SICOPOLIS and a spin-up-type initialisation, that is, a paleoclimatic simulation over 135 ka until the present. A major new component of the model is a physically-based parameterisation of ice shelf basal melting. In this parameterisation, basal melting of ice shelves is computed as a function of both the depth of ice below mean sea level and far-field ocean temperatures. The parameterisation is tuned differently for eight Antarctic sectors in order to achieve reasonable agreement with the modern spatial distribution of ice shelf basal melting. InitMIP-Antarctica also comprises three future climate scenarios, all to be run over 100 a: ctrl (present-day climate), asmb (prescribed schematic surface mass balance anomaly) and abmb (prescribed schematic basal melting anomaly under ice shelves). We present and discuss the performance of the spin-up in terms of agreement between simulated and observed present-day geometry and flow. Further, we investigate the response of the Antarctic ice sheet to the three future climate scenarios.</p>
