Each participant of the Monitoring assessment was required to provide a number of references they deemed appropriate for the report after the first author meeting in Montreal (Nov-2024).

The TSU produced a literature corpus based on these references (See protocol)

This corpus has been interrogated to complement connections to other chapters of the assessment and provide specific examples, in particular related to issues with monitoring (Links with Chapter 4) and the scientific monitoring process (links with chapter 2).

Work is on going to extend this review.

Figure 1.5.4 displays the mapping of the 23 targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) to the elements of the IPBES conceptual framework. The mapping is produced independently by the contributors and integrated as a consensus by the project leader.

The list of KMGBF targets and their description is obtained from the CBD website (https://www.cbd.int/gbf/targets), the elements of the IPBES framework are adapted from Díaz et al., 2015, and described more extensively in section 1.5.1 and the protocol section below.

The list of indicators per KMGBF target and the corresponding element in the IPBES CF is adapted from Sica, Y. V., Gudde, R., Gómez Suárez, M., & Niamir, A. (2024). The use of indicators in IPBES assessments and other global frameworks (Version 2).
A review of previous IPBES assessments will be the basis for the textual content of section 1.7 Monitoring across the IPBES Conceptual Framework as well as the table(s), figure(s) and case study (TBC) illustrating the section. The full extraction table will be made available as an appendix to the MTA. Specifically, section 1.7 aims at identifying how monitoring is addressed across the different components of the IPBES conceptual framework (IPBES CF) in previously published assessments.

The review focuses on the elements of the IPBES CF for which monitoring is discussed (e.g., Nature? Direct drivers? NCP?), and, when the information is available, which observations are collected?, why?, and by who?. Aspects of knowledge and information gaps highlighted in assessments will also be considered when they are (or can be) directly linked to further monitoring needs.

The indicators were a product of the first IPBES work programme spanning 2014 - 2019. In 2020, the technical support unit on knowledge and data harmonized the previous datasets collected. Two datasets were formed. The first described indicators available at the country scale, and the second indicators summarized or reported at the regional to global scale. The steps taken to standardize and clean the datasets are detailed in the report (IPBESCoreIndicatorsReport_final.pdf).

The data deposit package consists of these two harmonized datasets (CountryLevelData_Cleaned.csv and RegionalData_cleaned.csv), a zipped file with all fact sheets and storylines available (factsheets.zip), another zipped file with the original data provided from the previous technical support unit (Original_datasets.zip).

The file Summary_R_functions.txt contains an R script with two functions to summarize the data. The first function summarizes by indicator and the second by area respectively.
</dc:description>

We conducted a comprehensive review of the literature on the status and trends of nature’s contributions to people (NCP). The literature review will be based on published peer-reviewed scientific articles, but also will include assessment relying on indicators and material on indigenous and local knowledge (ILK). The synthesis of the data from the review will assist in evaluating the main trends in the different sub-regions. The review was also used to establish guidance for documenting the dominant characteristic NCP and help in finding appropriate case studies for the Chapter boxes. An integrated and standardised spreadsheet is being developed to structure the literature review and to help summarise the trends and to contribute to the attribution of confidence and uncertainty.
</dc:description>

          <dc:description>
IPBES, [the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services] (https://ipbes.net) has the overall mission “to strengthen the science-policy interface for biodiversity and ecosystem services for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, long-term human well-being and sustainable development”.

In this capacity, IPBES is integrating existing data and knowledge and provides assessments on topics it is mandated to by the member governments. Based on these assessments, Summaries for Policy Makers are produced, which are the documents used for policy support. This whole process does not involve the generation of new data. So why does an organisation like this need a Data Management Policy? Which lessons did we learn from developing this DM Policy? And are there areas, in which a DM Policy by an orginisation like IPBES should develop, in contrast to other data generating organisations? I will discuss these issues, provide some answers, but will leave many questions open for discussion, as not much existing experiences in this area is available.
</dc:description>

          <dc:description>
The IPBES data management tutorials are short videos to help experts implement the IPBES data and knowledge management policy. They cover topics ranging from data and knowledge management policy, reports, active research data, tools, and examples.

Please note that the IPBES data and knowledge management policy is the second version of the IPBES data management policy.

This chapter contains examples of how certain data management tasks and workflows were implemented within IPBES so that they follow the data management policy. Currently, this chapter contains legacy videos and the most recent examples can be found within the IPBES technical guidelines here: https://ict.ipbes.net/ipbes-ict-guide/data-management/technical-guidelines

The chapter includes the following sessions:

Session 6.1: Data management best practices (10.5281/zenodo.4018663)

Session 6.2: Literature review from the Global Assessment chapter 4 (10.5281/zenodo.4018667)

</dc:description>
          <dc:description>These tutorials were created in collaboration between the IPBES task force on knowledge and data and the IPBES task force on capacity building. For inquires please contact tsu.data@ipbes.net</dc:description>

          <dc:description>
This dataset of decision-support tools corresponds to the IPBES nexus Assessment chapter 4, section 4.4. The methodology explained in this report responds to the mandate of chapter 4 to assess decision-support tools that help address nexus challenges, including characteristics that describe (a) set nexus-relevant objectives and targets, (b) response option choices, and (c) scaling. Three sources of data were included in a systematic review to identify nexus-relevant decision-support tools: a systematic review of peer-reviewed literature, a grey literature review, and a nexus assessment call for relevant Indigenous and local knowledge (ILK) resources.
</dc:description>

Description: Identifying “the way in which different worldviews, associated with different types of values have been included in decision-making contexts” is part of Chapter 2 mandate. Subsection 2.3.2.3’s objective is to provide evidence for this issue. Expert knowledge, searches using general concepts and others using key concepts were the methods used to gather evidence for this purpose. This literature review is part of the Stage 2 strategy that Chapter 2 has incorporated to bring different sources of evidence appropriate for each section and subsection, allowing to obtain a broader and deeper database to fulfil the mandate of the Scoping document.
</dc:description>

Description

This review corresponds to the IPBES values assessment. One of the topics that the assessment has to cover is the impact of institutions on values at stake in decision-making processes. In order to do so, chapter 2 must provide the conceptual basis on the relations between values and institutions, particularly those institutions that articulate values. Section 2.4 covers this subject by presenting information retrieved from systematic reviews and complemented by additional information. This report explains the process for gathering that additional information, which consisted of four separate literature searches. This literature review is part of the stage 2 strategy that chapter 2 has incorporated to bring in different sources of evidence appropriate for each section and subsection.
</dc:description>

The mandate of Ch. 3 is to assess different valuation methodologies and approaches, including (a) biophysical, social and cultural, economic, health and holistic (including indigenous and local community-based) and (b) approaches for the integration of different types of values. For the chapter to be based on a broad review of valuation methodologies and approaches that have been applied in the different specialized sources of information, chapter 3 classified valuation methods into four methods families, each family sharing similar fundamental properties, and conducted a systematic review to find literature that describes these method families. A systematic review was performed for every method family.
</dc:description>

Description:

This review corresponds to the IPBES Values assessment Chapter 3. The methodology explained in this report responds to the mandate of Ch. 3 that is to assess different valuation methodologies and approaches, including (a) biophysical, social and cultural, economic, health and holistic (including indigenous and local community-based) and (b) approaches for the integration of different types of values. For the chapter to be based on a broad review of valuation methodologies and approaches that have been applied in the different specialised sources of information, Chapter 3 did a first scan of a wide diversity of valuation methods and classified them into four method families, each family sharing similar fundamental properties. This report explains the systematic review for each of them to find literature that describes these method families.
</dc:description>

          <dc:description>
The objective of the underlying analysis is to synthesizes established knowledge on how trends of the most important indirect drivers, affect direct drivers and finally how this is affecting nexus elements.

Trends of selected indirect drivers were quantitively assessed using times series data of appropriate indicators (see Table 1 below for more details including data sources). Impacts of trends of indirect drivers on direct drivers and impacts of direct drivers on nexus elements were assessed using confidence statements based on scientific literature. Results are presented in form of a table (chapter 2 Figure 2.7) and a Sankey diagram (chapter 2 Figure 2.8).
</dc:description>
