The community model at Crossref and ORCID: how we use the following methods to work with our community and build a shared, open infrastructure to support scholarly communications, and which is responsive to changing needs:

Guiding principles/truths

Community governance and participation

Financial model

The concept of community and the nature of collaboration

Enduring-ness and evolution; common ground and space to diverge

This is why at Crossref we say that we are "smart alone; brilliant together".

The activity described in this worksheet is designed to help you to collaboratively identify and define, as a group, the core values that underpin your work together. It will support deeper conversations about what behaviors are acceptable and unacceptable in a team, community, or organization, and provide the underpinnings for the creation of a code of conduct/community participation guidelines, the implementation of those guidelines, and any future conversations about group culture.

This skills wheel is an output of the C3 project team from the 2017 cohort of the CSCCE Community Engagement Fellows Program (CEFP 2017). The members of the team were four Fellows: Jennifer Davison, Andreas Leidolf, Malin Sandström, Elisha Wood-Charlson, and Lou Woodley (staff). By comparing the skills listed in a range of scientific community manager job descriptions and surveying SCMs within the 2017 CEFP cohort the C3 team identified the five core competencies and component skills that make up the wheel. This guidebook is intended to be a brief, practical introduction to scientific community manager roles and provide a starting point for discussing common questions about them.

Providing the text of online meetings and events can support diverse participation in multiple ways - from supporting those who may be hard of hearing, or not fluent in the language being used, to enabling busy participants juggling other responsibilities to stay engaged with the meeting. In this tip sheet, we offer some solutions for creating captions, subtitles, and transcripts to improve accessibility of your online settings and events. We also offer some points for further consideration as you decide upon a solution that works for you.

Please note: This tip sheet was created before Zoom began offering a built-in captioning service. Whether you're using Zoom or another platform, the tip sheet still contains useful context and helpful suggestions as you decide on the best way to caption your next virtual event.

This guidebook focuses on the overall event planning process: We outline our PACT framework, which describes four key elements to consider when planning your meeting or event. This is the fourth part of our virtual events guide. Part 1 is a "recipe book" of online event formats, Part 2 is a curated collection of resources relevant to anyone who is convening virtual events, and Part 3 walks organizers through how to select and test online tools.

This is the first of three booklets we are releasing in 2023/24, each of which consists of several parts where we set up a metaphor and then go deeper into some of the community management challenges that the metaphor is best placed to unpack, with some reflections questions to support you at the end of each section. Each series of essays was originally posted on the CSCCE blog, and then discussed at one of our monthly community calls. If you have any feedback, or would like to let us know how you've been using metaphors to guide your work, please email us: info@cscce.org. We'd love to hear from you!

About CSCCE

The Center for Scientific Collaboration and Community Engagement (CSCCE) champions the importance of human infrastructure for effective collaboration in STEM.
This guide looks at how the choices made in organizing events contribute to building and nurturing a sense of community amongst attendees, as well as increased community member engagement and connectedness. This manual is authored by a team of scientific community managers who were part of the 2019 Center for Scientific Collaboration and Community Engagement (CSCCE) Community Engagement Fellows Program (CEFP). CEFP 2019 was funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. This manual is intended to contribute to the stated goal of the CEFP to “collect and disseminate knowledge about building strong collaborations and communities.”

This short guide outlines five steps to assist your assessment of virtual tools to supplement online meetings and events. We walk you through the process; defining the goals or use case first and then finding the right tool to meet your needs. This is the third part of our virtual events guide. Part 1 is a "recipe book" of online event formats, and Part 2 is a curated collection of resources relevant to anyone who is convening virtual events.

The CSCCE Community Participation Model describes four modes of member engagement that can occur within a community – CONVEY/CONSUME, CONTRIBUTE, COLLABORATE, and CO-CREATE - and one that can occur outside of it: CHAMPION. This guidebook is intended to help you use the model to inform your community member engagement strategy by answering a series of FAQs.

This presentation was given as a virtual workshop at the Science of Team Science 2020 conference. It describes a process designed by Lou Woodley to articulate core values - based on identifying and describing positive behaviors first before identifying representative values and defining them. It also includes a description of Bolman and Deal's 4 frames which can be used to consider what hinders the realization of core values within an organization.

We created this worksheet for our November 2021 community call on community governance models, using the Community Rules eBook as a guide. We found that this activity sparked some interesting conversations, highlighted nuance in the various models, and helped us all understand the complexities and power structures at play in our own communities. We hope that you find this document helpful as you host your own conversations on community governance.

This is one section of the CSCCE STEM community management glossary (view the full glossary on our website); a work in progress that will ultimately comprise a series of themed sections focused on specific topics. This "Virtual Events" section of the glossary is conceptualized as an “active glossary,” where we try to provide context for how, where, and why you as a community manager might come across these terms rather than just offering definitions. This section was co-created with members of our community of practice, and represents shared knowledge from more than two years of convening online.

This is one section of the CSCCE STEM community management glossary (view the full glossary on our website); a work in progress that will ultimately comprise a series of themed sections focused on specific topics. This "Inclusive Language in Community Building" section of the glossary is conceptualized as an “active glossary,” where we try to provide context for how, where, and why you as a community manager might come across these terms rather than just offering definitions. One way of looking at this resource is as a collection of discussion prompts: If you work with others, try taking a few relevant terms and descriptions to your next staff meeting or coffee hour and see where the conversation takes you.

About CSCCE
The Center for Scientific Collaboration and Community Engagement (CSCCE) champions the importance of human infrastructure for effective collaboration in STEM. We provide training and support for the people who make scientific collaborations succeed at scale and we also research the impact of these emerging roles.
