Demonstration land cover maps over Africa at 100m resolution for epoch year 2016, from the global component of the Copernicus Land Service and derived from PROBA-V satellite observations.

The maps include the main discrete classification (23 classes aligned with UN-FAO's LCCS), a set of cover fractions (%) for the 10 main classes and additional quality layers (e.g. density of input data).

For the consolidated epoch 2016, the classifier and regression models of base year 2015 are used, and the time window of the classified metrics covers one full year prior (2015) and pastor (2017) data. The layers with the probability of the discrete classification and the standard deviation of the cover fractions are only provided for the base year (epoch 2015). The Change Consistency Layer that checks consistency between classifier and break detection, is only available for the most recent (near-real time) year (epoch 2018).

The Salonga land cover and change dataset covers an area of 66 625km2 and mapped with dichotomous (8 land cover classes) and modular (up to 32 land cover classes) levels based on FAO's Land Cover Classification System (LCCS). High-resolution optical satellite imagery were used to generate dense time-series data from which the thematic land cover and change maps were derived (LC: 2016, LCC:2019). The maps were fully verified and validated by an independent team to achieve the Copernicus Global Land Monitoring Programme's strict data quality requirements. An independent validation dataset was also collected and it is shared here. The validation dataset contains 3069 verified land cover points based on the 32 modular level land cover classes. Furthermore, two predefined symbology (QGIS legend files) for the land cover and validation datasets based on FAO's LCCS is also shared here to ease the visualization of them (Dichotomous and Modular levels).
Wetlands are highly productive ecosystems and provide a range of goods and services on local to global scales and have become key sites of agricultural development in sub-Saharan Africa. This is the case for East African countries such as Rwanda, where agricultural expansion into wetlands and agricultural intensification are crucial elements of the government's strategy to increase food production and decrease dependence from global food markets. However, spatially explicit information of the location and status of wetlands for informed decision making is lacking or not up to date. In the related research article, we therefore develop a framework comprising the following spatial layers: Delineation, Surface Water Occurrence (SWO), Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) classification and Wetland Use Intensity (WUI). These layers are based on satellite imagery from the European Copernicus Programme and cover the whole of Rwanda. The Delineation is derived from a static Potential Wetlands layer and Sentinel-2 imagery using object-based image analysis (OBIA). The SWO is a per-pixel count of the times a location was detected as flooded using Sentinel-1 imagery. For the LULC classification, an object-based decision tree classifier is applied to Sentinel-2 imagery in Combination with the Delineation layer and the SWO. The WUI layer is based on the Absolute Mean Spectral Dynamics indicator depicting pixel-wise changes in reflectance values in Sentinel-2 bands relevant for wetland vegetation and hydrological dynamics. All layers refer to the year 2017, except for the SWO layer, which covers surface water dynamics from 2014 to 2017. The layers can be used individually or in combination and thus adapted to the different information needs for sustainable wetland management.
This dataset contains the Potential Wetlands map based on topographic indices, the Wetland Delineation derived from it, the Surface Water Occurrence layer, the Land Use/Land Cover map, and the Wetland Use Intensity layer. For appropriate map display we provide QGIS layerstyle files associated with these layers.

This research was conducted within the project Copernicus-based Detection and Monitoring of tropical Wetlands (DeMo-Wetlands), which was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (grant no. 50EE1537).

The Caribbean land cover and change dataset covers an area of 89 883km2 and mapped with dichotomous (8 land cover classes) and modular (up to 32 land cover classes) levels based on FAO's Land Cover Classification System (LCCS). High-resolution optical satellite imagery were used to generate dense time-series data from which the thematic land cover and change maps were derived (LC: 2017, LCC: 2000). The maps were fully verified and validated by an independent team to achieve the Copernicus Global Land Monitoring Programme's strict data quality requirements. An independent validation dataset was also collected and it is shared here. The validation dataset contains 4029 verified land cover points based on the [up to] 32 modular level land cover classes. Furthermore, two predefined symbology (QGIS legend files) for the land cover and validation datasets based on FAO's LCCS is also shared here to ease the visualization of them (Dichotomous and Modular levels). Further details regarding the sites selection, mapping and validation procedures are described in the corresponding publication: Szantoi, Zoltan; Brink, Andreas; Lupi, Andrea (2021): An update and beyond: key landscapes for conservation land cover and change monitoring, thematic and validation datasets for the African, Caribbean and Pacific region (in review, Earth System Science Data).

A map of 73 global biome clusters, geographic areas that were grouped to optimize the global 100m land cover processing.

In order to group Earth Observation data for faster processing or adaptation of algorithms to specific regions, the 100m global land cover (CGLS-LC100) algorithm uses a Global Biome Cluster layer. The term biome cluster hereby refers to a geographic area which has similar bio-geophysical parameters and, therefore, can be grouped for processing. In other words, the biome cluster layer can be seen as an ecological regionalisation which outlines areas of similar environmental conditions, ecological processes, and biotic communities (Coops et al., 2018). There are already several global regionalisation layers existing, e.g. Ecoregions 2017 global dataset (Dinerstein et al., 2017), Geiger-Koeppen global ecozones after Olofsson update (Olofsson et al., 2012), Global ecological zones for FAO forest reporting with update 2010 (FAO, 2012). But several tests in the CGLS-LC100 workflow have shown that the existing layers did not provide the required global and continental classification accuracy. These findings go along with Coops et al. (2018) who stated that "Most regionalisations are made based on subjective criteria, and cannot be readily revised, leading to outstanding questions with respect to how to optimally develop and define them."

Therefore, we decided to develop a customized ecological regionalisation layer which performs best with the given PROBA-V remote sensing data and the specifications of the CGLS-LC100 product. It groups spectral similar areas and helps to optimize the later classification/regression to regional patterns. Input into the layer creation were well-known existing datasets which were combined, re-grouped and advanced based on prior CGLS-LC100 classification results and local mapping knowledge of the workflow developer. To ensure that this layer is clearly separable from other existing regionalisations and not mistakenly interpreted as an eco-region layer, we decide to call it biome clusters layer.

The following steps outline the global biome clusters layer generation:

Spatial union of Ecoregions 2017 dataset (Dinerstein et al., 2017), Geiger-Koeppen dataset (Olofsson et al., 2012) and Global FAO eco-regions datasets (FAO, 2012);

Regrouping and dissolving by using experience from first global CGLS-LC100 mapping results and subjective mapping experience of the developer;

Refinement of the biome clusters in the High North latitudes via incorporation of a Global tree-line layer (Alaska Geobotany Center, 2003);

Manual improvement of borders between biome clusters to reduce classification artefacts by using a DEM and mapping experience from previous projects and continental test runs;

Usage of a global land/sea mask, the Sentinel-2 tiling grid and PROBA-V imaging extent to extend the borders of the biome clusters into the sea to make sure that also small islands on the coastline are correctly processed.

When developing a regionalisation, the definition of the clusters and the boundaries that delineate them in time and space is the key challenge. Overall, the map distinguishes 73 global biome clusters.

Natural resources are increasingly being threatened in the world. Threats to biodiversity and human well-being pose enormous challenges to many vulnerable areas. Effective monitoring and protection of sites with strategic conservation importance require timely monitoring with special focus on certain land cover classes which are especially vulnerable. Larger ecological zones and wildlife corridors warrant monitoring as well, as these areas have an even higher degree of pressure and habitat loss as they are not “protected” compared to Protected Areas (i.e. National Parks). To address such a need, a satellite-imagery-based monitoring workflow to cover at-risk areas was developed. During the program’s first phase, a total of 560 442 km2 area in sub-Saharan Africa was covered. In this update we remapped some of the areas with the latest satellite images available, and in addition we added some new areas to be mapped. Thus, in this version we updated and mapped an additional 852 025km2 in the Caribbean, African and Pacific regions with up to 32 land cover classes. Medium to high spatial resolution satellite imagery was used to generate dense time series data from which the thematic land cover maps were derived. Each map and change map were fully verified and validated by an independent team to achieve our strict data quality requirements. Further details regarding the sites selection, mapping and validation procedures are described in the corresponding publication: Szantoi, Zoltan; Brink, Andreas; Lupi, Andrea (2021): An update and beyond: key landscapes for conservation land cover and change monitoring, thematic and validation datasets for the African, Caribbean and Pacific region (in review, Earth System Science Data/).

This Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document (ATBD) describes in detail the methodology used to produce the first version, over Africa, of the 100m Land Cover product that was released under the global component of the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service.

The methodology covers the retrieval and pre-processing of Earth Observation satellite (PROBA-V) observations, the calculation of metrics, the main classification, the regression for the versatile cover fraction layers and so on.

Next to the detailed ATBD, a summary Product User Manual describes the product (methodology, quality, contents and format) and Validation Report(s) provide more details on the validation and quality of the product.

In May 2019, following the release of the first global 100m land cover maps, with a second version of the algorithm and improved quality, the first version maps over Africa are no longer publicly available.

This demo dataset over Africa is deprecated. Please see this global dataset instead.

Demonstration land cover maps over Africa at 100m resolution for epoch year 2018, from the global component of the Copernicus Land Service and derived from PROBA-V satellite observations.

The maps include the main discrete classification (23 classes aligned with UN-FAO's LCCS), a set of cover fractions (%) for the 10 main classes and additional quality layers (e.g. density of input data).

For the near-real time (nrt) epoch 2018, the classifier and regression models of base year 2015 are used, and the time window of the classified metrics covers one full year prior (2017) and three months pastor (Jan-March 2019) data. The nrt map can then be supplied in the fourth month after the most recent completed calendar year, and is updated (consolidated) afterwards by using a full year of paster data (when epoch 2019-nrt is produced, epoch 2018 is consolidated).

The layers with the probability of the discrete classification and the standard deviation of the cover fractions are only provided for the base year (epoch 2015). The Change Consistency Layer that checks consistency between classifier and break detection, is only available for this near-real time epoch
