Der Tagesbedarf des Erwachsenen an Vitamin C [Adult requirements for vitamin C]

Description
SUMMARY
Adult requirements for vitamin C. By A. Scheunert. Available data suggest the need for larger daily intakes of vitamin C than usually advocated, but it is impossible to specify exact quantities. The Food and Nutrition Board's recommandations (1945) appear justifiable. In an eight months experiment involving 10 groups each of 240 to 450 industrial workers, daily intakes of 100 or 300 mg pure ascorbic acid caused a reduction of respectively 68 and 66.4 % in morbidity over the whole 244 days of the experiment. Smaller vitamin C supplements had no effect, but intakes of 500 ug vitamin B1, as supplement to these smaller allowances, caused a small but distinct fall in morbidity. It is concluded that a high daily intake of vitamin C, namely 125 mg, is desirable for optimal nutritional conditions.
