The tasks of the ZIB lie in the research and development of models and algorithms in order to be able to answer questions from the natural, engineering and life sciences, medicine and the social sciences and humanities with the help of computer simulations and optimization methods as well as data-driven processes. To this end, research at ZIB combines application-oriented mathematics and algorithmically oriented areas of data science in a multidisciplinary approach with high-performance computing and highly efficient data analysis.
ZIB combines basic research with applied research, including the transfer of knowledge to application disciplines and business/industry. Commercial re-use is subordinate to scientific research and must be in a synergetic context with the latter.
