SAFE LANDing through enhanced ground support
Pilots may become incapacitated during flight. Although a rare occurrence, pilot incapacitation, especially in a single-pilot aircraft, can present a significant risk. Incapacitation can result from various reasons, from gastrointestinal illnesses to death, a more extreme example.
The main aim of the EU-funded project, SAFELAND is to create a valuable solution for supporting flight and landing of aircraft operated by a single pilot, due to partial or total incapacitation of the pilot. During its 30-month duration, the project will investigate the interaction of the air traffic controller with onboard automation and/or a ground-based pilot operating through a remote cockpit position to manage the flight.
The project will develop a real-time cockpit simulator, a control work position, a ground cockpit simulator, and a simulated airline operation control centre.
