FEDECOM aims to enable integrated local energy systems through sector coupling and cross-energy vector integration, increasing RES penetration via optimal energy dispatch, storage, and conversion assets. FEDECOM promotes electricity becoming the leading energy carrier, with power grids as the backbone for decarbonising all energy sectors and aggregators as enablers of exploitation. FEDECOM adopts and maximises the potential synergies between two complementary deployment strategies: direct electrification, e.g. via demand electrification, and indirect electrification with power-to-X technology. FEDECOM will deliver a scalable and adaptable cloud-based platform offering analytical, modelling and optimisation services for planning, supervising, and controlling integrated local energy systems —power, gas, heating and cooling, industry, electric and hydrogen mobility. Hybrid renewable energy source (RES) and storage infrastructures will demonstrate optimised operation of the integrated systems, while enabling a holistic cooperative demand response (DR) strategy across the federation of energy communities. With the concept of federation of energy communities, FEDECOM aims to unlock the flexibility potential, enable energy exchange, and provide coordinated actions across near and remote sites, while maximising the positive impact on the grid transmission level. Three real large-scale pilots will verify FEDECOM’s integrated package, each composed of multiple (federation) demo sites (communities):

  • Spanish Virtual Green Hydrogen (H2) Federation,

  • Swiss Residential Hydropower Federation and

  • BE-NL Cross-country E-Mobility Federation.

After FEDECOM, dissemination and engagement activities will train local energy communities and service providers to own the FEDECOM solution and its business ecosystem.
