The establishment of Animal Welfare Reference Centres is laid down in the Official Controls Regulation (EU) 2017/625 (Articles 95 & 96).
In March 2018, the Commission designated a first EU Reference Centre for animal welfare focusing on pigs (Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/329). This centre aims at improving the enforcement of the EU legislation on pigs, including their transport and killing operations.
The centre EURCAW-Pigs, which started operating on 1 October 2018, is constituted of a consortium formed by the Wageningen Livestock Research (the Netherlands), the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (Germany) and the Department of Animal Science at Aarhus University (Denmark).
EURCAW-Pigs is co-funded by the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety of the European Commission, as well as from the national governments of three partners forming the Centre.
The platform is only dedicated to EURCAW-Pig‘s production including scientific documents (e.g. reviews, factsheets).
The EURCAW-Pigs knowledge base is a curated, open repository dedicated to the Centre’s output production.
Our aim is to:
- make available the EURCAW-Pigs outputs related to our five activities and relevant to the EU Member States Competent Authorities (CAs) and their Supporting Bodies (SBs),
- link available external documents (e.g. scientific publications, reports, etc) related to the activity of the Centre and relevant to the CAs and SBs.
The platform is only dedicated to EURCAW-Pig‘s production including reports, reviews, and factsheets.
EURCAW-Pigs is co-funded by the European Commission.
