summary
abstract For the syrphid traits, the starting point was the data compiled during PhD of Marija Milicic. Within this project, trait data for species present in Southeast Europe were compiled, primarily based on published literature, field observations and expert opinion. This list was broadened to also include other European species. Finally, trait data was collected for 17 different traits and for 893 European species of syrphid flies.
methodology Published information (larval microhabitat, larval food type, duration of larval development, number of generations, inundation tolerance, flight period, body size, AOO, EOO), field and laboratory observations (body structure, body hairs, flying ability, flight height) expert opinion (distribution, adult macrohabitat, human impact tolerance) and interpolation from the existing traits (number of larval microhabitats) were used to compile the dataset. Where trait states were mutually exclusive, they were coded as categorical variables, and where it was possible that one species has several trait states, those variables were dummy-coded, where each trait state represents particular column.
