What it is that I'm doing, is it courage?
Nah, I don't know.
It's not speed.
I wouldn't use that as the word of what my need is.
My need is to challenge myself, both mentally and physically.
My name is Steve Huff.
I'm a land speed racer.
Once I'm on the starting line, once the guy drops the flag and gives me the course,
I don't even think about it.
I know what my limits are.
My limits may be a little higher, a little further out there than a lot of people.
Adrenaline's like any other drug.
You build a tolerance to it.
Ever since I was young, I've been taking things apart to make them go faster.
These days, I redesign, build, and race some of the fastest Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the world.
So when are you going to Bonneville?
How much time do we have?
Three minutes.
So you went bad?
Yeah.
Awesome.
Excellent.
Yes.
Great.
Little drained it.
Little paint.
Make it all the way to eight.
This is Ryan.
Ryan's my right hand.
My left hand at times.
He's my right foot, 99% of the time.
I learned a lot from the guy.
He's an excellent teacher.
And the tire cutout is going to be fine right there.
80 cubic inches.
We're making 140 horsepower without the nitrous.
It's homegrown stuff.
I'm trying to do this out of this garage, out of little sleepy Des Moines.
Six hours of sleep in three days.
And I blew a hole in the side of the primary case.
The chain's gone.
I'm sitting there somewhere.
We're at Bonneville for the 65th anniversary speed week.
Last year I broke a record year.
It stood for 31 years.
This year, I'm back to break it again.
There you go.
Assault flackers.
A barren wasteland where the only life to be found is within the land speed races.
We continue to migrate here each year to test themselves and their machines.
354, 854.
Holy cow.
You don't see rubber stamped vehicles out here.
I came to attempt my 69th land speed record.
This guy with the target on his back.
We are the fastest record ever at Salt Blast for an open motorcycle.
So 262.4.
How do you practice with something like that?
For me, the only practice is mental.
I'm so bloody pissed off, I can't even explain it.
Help me up.
People don't understand the commitment that it takes to have your name in the book.
And they got it.
Join me and the top land speed racers in the world as we travel to the fastest tracks
in pursuit of our next record on Speed Freak.
