When we left off on familysearch.org we were looking at a marriage record and I
wanted to point out at the bottom of those images we can clearly see if we
click the image index that there was indeed an index created for these pages
and there's the groom Nathaniel Kahoon that we had been looking at and if we
scroll over there's the bride free love Andrew there wasn't a lot more
information in that record to be indexed but had we gone into family search and
done a normal search we actually would have found this record because it was
indexed properly but many records are not going to be indexed yet so let's talk
about using those. So here we are back on the Coventry Vital records we're going
to click on a newer set of records this has two different microfilms only one
of them is online and we're going to go look at that one. So the microfilm rule
that we pick up starts with a volume that is births that's not what we want
we're going to quickly scroll down and we're going to be looking for the second
volume that's marriages and that's not what we want we want deaths so we're
just going to find something that looks like a new volume and here we go
record of deaths 1843 to 1900 perfect so as we page through image by image we
come to the index and here's the letter a and boy this is not a great copy
so there's some a's and remember how I said they're not in alphabetical order
within the a's they're in the order that they appear in the book so how many a's
do we have there's b but the a's have continued on to this page the death I'm
looking for is about in the middle of the time period of these record of this
book so I'm going to look around the middle of the a's up here we go Andrew
and the first name Alden is on page 34 of this death index now this probably
takes the rest of these set of images but I don't really know where that would
be we're going to skip and enter just ignore this image unavailable they
usually are available I don't know why it says that we've landed on page 33 oh
good we're very close and notice in these more modern books the two page
spread is numbered as one page so if we go to the next image we're going to get
to page 34 now I know that Alden must be in December oh and here he is not a
great copy but December 13th Alden Andrews age 57 a male that was married he
was a farmer he was born somewhere in Connecticut parents were Jesse and
something Andrews he had a paralytic fit for maybe a period of eight months
leading to his death so if we look down here to see if this had been indexed it
is not indexed there's a little information about our film but there is
no index at all so we would never find Alden's page or record without do
entering this book the way we did and just scrolling through the microfilm
