Ian wrath, thank you for the invite to speak again. I'm going to speak for about 13 minutes.
We're going to fast forward for these model projects and then we'll talk something about temporary and something permanent.

Eastside has 16 identifiable points which enable it to render a virtual artwork above it and around it and on it, and as they get deployed in different locations you can go up to them and download the app that enables you to interact with them.
it's really, it's quite interesting being asked to design the art gallery rather than the artwork as per usual.
But the next project I'd like to talk about
is the artwork.

Ond yna,
I put my head in my hands at this point.
This is testing.
John is not shining a light at Stefan's groin.
It was actually part of the structure, this liquid crystal,
to check that it reflected light.
We had to design not only the kind of sculpture itself,
but also how it picked up the light,
and then the kind of hero pieces, this kind of 12-metre high sculpture.
Around it, you have this landscape of digital water
in these rails set into benches,
and there's a sort of soundscape that accompanies it.
The build process happened actually a couple of months ago.
I'll let this run.
This was pre-made in these sort of small toad burn sections in Wakefield.
We chose, I think, the wettest day in the autumn to do it.
That was it unveiled.
Anyway, I'll let the next movie run for about two minutes.
The sculpture essentially is a virtual waterform.
There's many parameters controlling how the animations travel across the surface.
There you can see the facets to afford different views of it.
It's a reflected liquid crystal in two tones of blue.
And it looks great looking other way towards the Olympic Stadium.
The black you're seeing there is a liquid crystal surface
that's switching through 255 scales of shading
to reveal a panel beneath each shutter.
Unfortunately, I don't have a sound recording.
This is a generative pattern.
It's always new. It's always changing.
It takes gravity, wind and a whole series of different factors into account.
We're also rendering a soundscape that actually is around the piece as well
and through the thoroughfares leading up to it.
I'm going to take the risk now about ten minutes in
of actually asking to see if there's any questions.
How much did it cost?
That's a very good question.
Well, there's the official bill.
A piece like that is part of what they call a section 106 agreement.
Westfield had to create a series of, well, a nice public realm,
put public artworks into the public realm
and this is part of a planning agreement
and the planning agreement with Newham was £2 million.
So we spent that money for them.
I'm not actually sure how much Westfield paid for it
but it certainly would have been a reasonable proportion of that.
It's there.
Well, we have moral rights.
Before they do anything to it, move it,
they have to tell us.
We've been building this, testing it, mocking it up.
So there's a lot of expectation management and handholding
and them seeing us doing visualisations and tests
and mockups and prototypes at many different scales.
Also, the council have bought into it
and basically as part of the agreement to have the shopping centre there,
they have to have this public realm there at the same time.
It's a new planning application to do something different, essentially.
So design life is 25 years with ongoing looking further as well.
Any more questions?
I think I've got another couple of minutes
but if you don't, I can carry on with my Christmas party.
Sorry, I forgot that.
Actually, I'll take guesses.
What does anyone think? Good guess.
It isn't solar powered.
What do you think? How many watts?
Come on.
Million watts. No, no, I'll put you out of your misery.
60 watts is the amount of power
that drives the reflective LCD system.
The controlling computer and the speakers
probably use a little bit more but not much more.
So we're quite proud of that fact.
Sorry?
No, 60 watts is the rating of what it uses.
So that's how many joules per second it is using up.
But no, it will be that amount timed by the number of hours it's on.
So I'm not sure.
It will be 600 watts a day or 800 watts a day or something like that.
It uses up.
But these lamps are going to use up tonight.
All that one there is.
Any more questions?
No, good.
Thank you very much.
Sorry?
How do you clean it?
All these really, really pragmatic questions.
Well, you can either take a crane like that
and hang from it and clean alongside it.
No, there's an access hatch underneath through it
and an access hatch on top.
So any maintenance on the inside
happens up a triangular trus ladder
and then you use cherry pickers and vertical scissor lifts
to access the outside of it.
And you put out a kind of, you did ask,
and you put out wooden boards to spread the weight
over the granite sets around it
so you don't crack them in theory.
And that will be done in six-monthly intervals.
Okay, I think that's probably enough.
I better go back to my party.
But thank you very much indeed.
