Tell me about his dogs, because you used to take care of his dogs.
Oh yeah, I used to take a Humbo, or a Socrates, with a, he was kept in the office mainly,
and I never took him home.
He always took him home.
But Bogey, I used to take him to the vet, have a nail clip, bath, one time I took him,
we got there, he got off the car, and he wiggled out of his collar and ran across 16th Street.
I took after him like a hell, without looking with the cars coming or not, you know, 16th
Street is pretty busy.
Right.
And I just took off, and the guy said, if he's going to get hit, I want to get hit.
And he said, if he got hit, he weren't going back to the restaurant, right?
No, no way in the world.
Right, because those dogs were pretty much his best friend.
They were his life.
Yeah.
And when Bogey got sick, they called me to the house, and said, come and get the dog,
take him to the vet.
So I said, okay, so when I got him, I had to help them out to get, put him in the car.
He says, they know what you do over there.
I said, okay, put him to sleep.
I was sad, because that dog, he'd get in Durant's car, nobody would get near it.
He'd go crazy in that car.
Right.
It was his car, nobody would get in.
Tell me about the jukebox.
You're telling me before you got there, there used to be inside Durant, not a lot of people
know this.
There used to be a jukebox and a dance floor.
Right, there used to be a dance floor and a jukebox, and we call it the cubby hole now.
Okay.
Which is, as you go into your left, and you turn left again, there's a cubby hole there.
And people used to go in there creating music and dance and everything else, and finally
got rid of that thing, his wife always playing rockin' Elvis Presse music, nothing but Elvis
all the time.
Oh, he got fed up with Elvis.
Got fed up with his wife too.
Got fed up with the wife, got rid of both of them.
Is there anything else you can tell me about Jack, any more memories you have about him?
Things he did?
Oh yeah, one time he was in the bar drinking, and he come out of the, come into the kitchen
and he got a machete, he was calling a meat cleaver, and he run back to the dining room.
He was going to hit somebody with it, by the way, to stop him.
Wow.
So, called him off and got the waiter, got the customer, threw him out the front door.
He better get out of here, don't ever come back.
That's awesome.
Yeah, I heard a lot of people got kicked out of Durant's back in the day.
Back in the day, yeah, they don't, you know, they misbehave.
You're out of there.
Thank you, Ernie, for coming out and talking to us, sharing your stories.
I appreciate it.
You're welcome.
