On this is a momentous day.
In the wildlife history of Targo and Dunedin particularly, because we are receiving eight kiwi
from the most endangered of all of the varieties of kiwi, the青, Hawaiian or native Water Госu.
Delivert here by the Department of Conservation
...and to be released here in a ceremony which involves the two runanga.
One which, from South Westland, is the guardian of this particular variety of kiwi...
...and the other runanga is the local kati hui rapa...
...who will be taking over the guardian ship, if you like, while the birds are here.
They're here to establish a new breeding population...
...a kind of an insurance, if you like, against any further decline in the species in South Westland.
We're absolutely delighted to have them here.
We are in the process of reintroducing species here, which have been here, which were here in the past...
...but have been removed and come locally extinct anyway.
So this is part of the restoration of this valley to what it was before people were here.
...and to be released here in a ceremony which involves the two runanga.

ʻAltaro
ʻTo believe
ʻJust released a ʻHas Toko'ike kiwi,
ʻone of only 350 in the country.
ʻBut what is so special and fantastic is that Otago
ʻhasn't had any kiwis for the last 130 years,
ʻso it's a really, really precious special moment.
ʻI think it's got a cool home.
ʻIt was very comfortable going in there.
ʻIt looked as though you didn't want to come out.
ʻThe first kiwis
ʻunderneath in 130 years to inhabit our native forest.
ʻAbsolute and marvelous.
