Energy and water. The essentials of life. In the Kingdom of Bahrain, and indeed around
the world, demand for reliable and high quality sources of power and water continues to grow.
Access to these sources is inextricably linked with successful and sustainable economic development
and the overall enhancement of the quality of life and prosperity of every citizen.
Aldour Power and Water Company has been established to meet this very need for access to clean,
reliable and competitively priced sources of power and water for Bahrain, its businesses
and its citizens. Aldour can rely upon the expertise of its shareholders. International
Power GDF Suiz, a world leader in independent power and water generation, Gulf Investment
Corporation, the largest financial investor in power and water projects in the GCC, and
their local partners, Social Insurance Organization, Bahrain Islamic Bank, Capital Management House,
First Energy Bank and Instrata Capital. Aldour commenced commercial operations in February
2012. It is the Kingdom's single largest independent producer of power and water and
thus a critical part of the Kingdom's economic infrastructure. It is also a key player in
driving forward Vision 2030 through the provision of vital resources necessary for the building
of a stronger and more diversified economy, and a more dynamic and lifestyle-friendly Bahrain.
With a capacity of 1,234 megawatts of power and more than 218,000 cubic metres of water
per day, Aldour is capable of meeting approximately one-third of the Kingdom's peak power needs
and one-third of the water requirements of Bahrain industry, business and citizens.
The full capacity of the plant is contracted out for a period of 25 years to Bahrain's
Electricity and Water Authority, the sole off-taker. It also has the potential to transform
Bahrain from an importer of power at peak periods of usage into an exporter of power
to other GCC countries. But Aldour does not only change the face of power and water generation
in the Kingdom through increased supplies. Through the use of cutting-edge technologies,
it provides for a number of benefits and unique value-added features which serve the Kingdom
well.
Designed and implemented by the world's leading developers and contractors from within the
region and from around the globe, Aldour stands at the forefront of reliability, environmental
friendliness and safety, all of which drive its production and efficiency, whilst simultaneously
enabling it to act as a strong corporate citizen that protects and preserves the integrity
of the Kingdom's air, land and waterways.
For water desalination, Aldour utilizes reverse osmosis, R.O., a technology that blends advanced
technique with environmental preservation. This is a first for a plant of its size in
the Middle East. Importantly, the plant's technology and structure also provide for
other unique features, ensuring uninterrupted production and supply of power and water for
the Kingdom.
Aldour is capable of transferring automatically to liquid diesel fuel. In the unforeseen event,
of gas supply disruption. This is also the only private power production facility in
the Kingdom, capable of independently restarting the national grid in the event of a nationwide
blackout scenario.
Together, these features combine to place Aldour at the center of national efforts to
meet the growing demand for power and water in the Kingdom of Bahrain as it continues
to build, diversify and strengthen its position as a leading regional business, financial
and lifestyle hub.
