What's going on is brought to you by Indolotus Imports, open every day from nine to five
at 145 Hollow Kauai Street Kihei, Indolotus Imports, indolotus.com.
Aloha and welcome to What's Going On. I'm here today, Joel Agnew along with my partner
and Michael Pulliam.
Good to see you Joel.
To let you know what's going on. What's going on Michael?
Well you know I said last week it is the most wonderful time of the year and it really is.
All the shows that I've been seeing are so fantastic. I can't rave enough about them.
So I'll get to them one at a time. But there's even more to come. Everything is full and packed.
But I do want to put out there that even though I say get your tickets now that doesn't mean
they're not available. There might only be say for example at Duke.
There were probably eight or ten seats left. But just because we say that tickets are
running out doesn't mean there's not still a handful available.
So let's just start with Duke. What a wonderful performance by Moses Goods.
My one little critique was that he was so good at presenting the happy Jovial Aloha
Duke that I would have liked to have seen some other layers.
Darker Duke.
I can't imagine that he was happy to go lucky 24-7 for seventy-seven years.
But it was a wonderful play and I have never seen a show that better use the technical
abilities of adding video projection into the action.
So on several occasions he would be holding a surfboard and specifically when he was
talking about his silent film career they would project the little title cards from
the actual old silent films that he was in on his surfboard as he's sort of running around
dancing in front of the movie screen and you see the real Duke being projected behind him.
And then at the end of the show when he sort of walks off the stage that magically so it
appeared the name Duke appeared written on the surfboard via projection.
But the timing of that is really difficult thing to do.
So I have no idea who was in the booth but if you're watching for some reason or you
know who it was phenomenal job whoever was in charge of that particular technical somebody
from the Mac did a fantastic job on that.
Another thing that I found out about too late to mention on last week's show was that the
Maui Mall is now showing has been showing for quite some time opera ballet Shakespeare
plays that they get the and some of the movies that are in the movie festival and they show
them in the they show them on this live performances on the movie screen.
And so I went to go see the Broadway production of She Loves Me which we talked about several
months ago when it was Tony time.
This was the original cast that you know the Tony nominated cast and oh my goodness it
was so good.
It was the best thing I've seen since Wicked.
I preferred it over the Book of Mormon.
It was just that good.
And the way that what made it so great was the performances.
It's a classic musical comedy but the performances were out of this world.
It's not a dance heavy show.
It's very much a dialogue comedy timing driven show but the songs are wonderful as well.
But what they must have done at least what I've concluded is that they took an audience
and said hey look we're going to have this camera crew running around on stage.
It's going to block your view.
So they invited all their friends.
Free tickets tonight.
And so they were able to get in there and do close ups and make a Broadway play look
like a movie as opposed to what you sometimes see on PBS where they have six or eight cameras
that are panning back quite a bit to get the full scope of the stage and then zooming in.
Yeah I like that whole technique of shooting from where the other character is.
And there was a lot of that and it was so well shot.
And then of course it's mixed with the mix in life.
So I'm going to do a better job in the future to look up when these musicals are going to
be in performance at the Maui Mall and include it here on our show so people can hear about
it.
It's a little more expensive.
Think more expensive than the Maui Film Festival.
But it's considerably cheaper than going to see a Broadway tour.
So think in terms of how much you pay to go see Mary Poppins.
And for me it was totally worth it because it was one of the best things I've ever seen.
And speaking of Mary Poppins and the idea of sold out.
These shows have been selling out but there are four performances left this weekend.
And when I was popped my head in on Sunday just to get a feel of how full it was I saw
seven or eight empty seats.
So you can still get tickets to Mary Poppins.
Just gets better and better every week.
How was that on the air on Sunday?
What time of day was the play going on?
It was at 6 p.m. because of the pops.
I was down there in at around 3 p.m. and because of the pops.
I will talk about the pops in a minute because I love that too.
Mary Poppins final performances are going to be Friday and Saturday at 7.30 p.m.
2 p.m. matinee on Saturday.
That was the one that was really packed this weekend.
And then the final performance will be 3 p.m. back to 3 p.m. on Sunday again at the Historic
Yell Theater to get tickets visit MauiOnStage.com.
You're going to see availability for all four of the shows but just be comfortable with
the idea that the seats that are left are in the very back rows of the theater.
I'm going to call for my tickets right after they show this.
But it is just getting better and better with each week.
The technical elements, we talked about technical elements with Duke.
Just get better and better the more times that you're able to run the show.
So in many ways the best four performances are still to come and you can check out the
final performances of Mary Poppins this weekend.
So I was at the pops on Sunday with Nicole Parker.
She was delightful.
Yes, of course.
Was Jim funny?
Jim was very funny.
And he's always very funny.
I felt like I saw two shows though.
And at intermission the person that I was with we talked about how we were a little disappointed
because she was a little stiff just kind of singing Christmas songs in the first act.
And I felt as if the material and the style of the pops wasn't a good fit at first.
But then in the second act it was Nicole Parker.
She's joking.
She's telling slightly dirty jokes.
She's doing impersonations of Ellen DeGeneres reading a night before Christmas with Jason
Sterichel.
Then she did the song from Wicked which just blew me away.
You've been having a lot of fun lately.
And I just thought like I wish that somehow the whole show could have been that.
But it was wonderful because I'm sure that the certain crowd that loves traditional pops
concerts loved the first act.
I loved the second act because it was non-traditional.
And something new.
I mean something different.
She had a song called The Twelve Days After Christmas where the true love gives everything
back and breaks up with a boyfriend.
And it was very clever and funny.
And yeah I think I've heard it before.
So we've got this clip coming up that I found it's an old silent movie a lost silent movie
that they showed on TCM a few months ago of William Gillette playing Sherlock Holmes.
And the reason I'm showing this is because it directly relates to The Games of Float
which I went to see on Friday night.
Very very funny.
There's more about it after the break.
Games of Float, Homes for the Holidays at the Pro-Arts Playhouse continuing through
December 18th.
You can get information and tickets by visiting ProArtsFromHalloy.com.
But this is a farcical comedy which we talked about last week that's also a murder mystery.
And the two blend together perfectly but it's also non-fiction.
Because William Gillette was this real actor that played Sherlock Holmes for 20 years.
He was very eccentric from all the money that he made as a Broadway performer.
He built this castle, this Gothic castle in Connecticut with all these secret passageways
and hidden doors and book shelves that open up and two-way mirrors so he could see what
was going on in different rooms.
And he had an intercom system all throughout the house.
So did he film it there then?
And speakers, the film was done in Hollywood but then he had his own recording studio.
This is in the 1930s, mind you, and an intercom system throughout his house.
And so what I found was a piece of video that is from the silent movie and then a lost recording
that William Gillette made of himself in his house doing Sherlock Holmes and they've combined
that audio that William Gillette made over William Gillette performing 20 years earlier
in the silent film.
Okay, well let's take a little peek at that.
This is very special.
I think that'd be a great thing to do.
Gentlemen, if you would please roll that clip.
You are about to hear a short re-enactment of one of the most famous characterizations
in the history of the American stage, with the William Gillette in scenes from his own
play, Sherlock Holmes.
The curtain rises on Sherlock Holmes' room in Baker Street.
The page boy has just acted in Dr. Watson and Holmes, who has been smoking his pipe in
the red glow of the half fire, rises to greet him.
Ah, what a nice dear fellow, my dear fellow, how are you, Holmes?
I'm delighted to see you, perfectly delighted of what my word I am, but oh, oh, I'm so sorry
to observe you in this way.
Yes, I'm not a little busy, but how did you know?
How did I?
Well, I like that.
How did I know?
How do I know anything?
How do I know that you go to the office and resume the practice of medicine without telling
me a word about it?
How do I know you've been getting yourself very wet lately?
That you have an extremely careless servant, girl, and that you've moved your dressing table
to the other side of your room?
Oh, Holmes, if you'd lived a few centuries, all they'd have burned you alive.
Such a congregation would have saved me a great deal of trouble and expense.
Tell me now, how did you know all that?
Oh, too simple to talk about.
Scratches and thumbs they cut, my dear fellow, on the inner side of your shoe there, just
where the fire lights flashed.
Scratches, cuts.
Somebody scraped away, crushed it, mud, and did it badly, badly.
Scraped the shoe along with it, and your wet feet and your careless servant all on one shoe.
Tastes badly shaved on right side.
All it used to be on left.
Light must come from the other side.
Couldn't the other one move you in?
There must have moved your dressing table.
Yes, but my medical practice, I don't see how you...
Now Watson, Watson, how perfectly absurd of you.
Sir, it becomes standing in here, fairly reeking with the odor of the odiform,
and with a black mark of nitrate of silver on the forefinger of your right hand,
and ask me how I know.
Of course, but how deduced, did you know?
My wife was away.
Where deduces your second Westcott button, and what deduces yesterday's books on your
second Westcott button, and why deduce the way the expression of a royal alligator.
Marvelous mouth.
Elementary, my dear fellow, elementary.
The child's play of deduction.
I'm only doing it for your amusement show.
Well, that was a really interesting way to take two different versions in to combine that.
And that's relatively new because it's one of those TCM lost films.
Right.
And so then with the actual William Gillette, his own personal recording of himself,
was discovered as well to piece those two things together.
It's such amazing stuff happening these days.
And so, of course, we're showing that if you're just joining us because the games of foot,
or homes for the holidays, in performance, this weekend Thursdays through Saturdays,
7.30 p.m., 3.00 p.m. Sundays, continuing through December 18th at the Pro Arts Playhouse.
You can get tickets by visiting Pro Arts Maui.
And William Hubbard plays William Gillette in this production.
Yeah, that's pretty amazing.
I don't want to give anything away.
I have a very full-length review that will give you more details coming out on Thursday in the Maui News.
But there are so many surprises in this that it was incredibly difficult to write a review
because I didn't want to give anything away.
But every time you think you have it figured out, you're wrong.
And there's another surprise all the way up to the end.
Multiple surprise endings for the games of foot.
And our good friend Rick Scheidemann is going to be doing his last show of the season on Sunday
at the Pioneer Inn Courtyard.
And it's going to be a child's Christmas in Wales presented by Dylan Thomas.
Of course, he will be playing Dylan Thomas since there's no one else in the company.
But no, it should be a really great show.
It starts at 6.30. You can get dinner and drinks and stuff while you're out there.
And everybody that comes just really loves it.
You're out there under the stars. It's nice, quiet day, Sunday.
So I've got that at 6.30 p.m. and you can get tickets in advance by calling 303-507-0987
or purchase them at the door.
But with all of the visitors on the island now, you might want to think about calling in advance for that.
And if you're thinking about dinner, you want to think about making reservations as well
because what happens is that everything is full.
I tried to do a little Christmas shopping this weekend. It was packed.
Everywhere I went to go, grab a bite to eat was packed.
But as long as you leave your house a little earlier, as long as you add an extra half hour
into whatever it is you're going to be doing, you can still enjoy all of the buzz going on on Maui
whether it's film, plays, concerts, or just going out to dinner.
Right.
And also coming up, this one you want to get tickets for in advance,
especially if you like to sit up close.
Like I do, you can check out the Maui Chamber Orchestra.
That's not until next weekend.
But why not get your tickets in advance?
7.30 p.m. concert Saturday, December 17th, 3 p.m. Sunday, December 18th.
This is at the Historic EO Theatre.
It's by visiting MauiOnStage.com.
And did I not write it down?
I think I forgot there.
Oh, here we go.
Maui Chamber Orchestra will also be doing a conversation with the conductor at 1.30 p.m. on Sunday, December 18th,
just prior to the 3 p.m. concert.
And they will be performing beloved holiday carols as well as classics by Johann Sebastian Bach,
Telemann, Mozart, Rudder, and again, traditional carols.
And they will be in concert, not just the, whatever it's going to be this time, let's say, 35-piece orchestra,
also with the Maui Masterworks chorale, which is about 50 or 60 singers in addition.
And we have a wonderful lengthy clip from last year's Christmas concert, which we will watch in a little bit.
But what a treat that all of these events are available to us here on Maui.
I feel like for the next month and probably going back to Thanksgiving.
I see how you're going to get any sleep this month.
Right.
You know, we might as well be in Honolulu or maybe even San Francisco with these kinds of choices.
Yeah.
The Willie Kay concert was sold out last weekend.
The night I went to go see Duke, the two surf movie screenings were sold out.
So a lot of people that showed up wanting to go get tickets for the surf movie,
the person, as I was waiting in line to get my tickets said,
well, we've got tickets left for Duke.
And so a lot of people went to see Duke and that filled,
and maybe they had 20, 30 seats left and that sort of filled up both of those performances as well.
It worked out well.
But everybody loved that show.
I didn't really like to see that.
That was one that everybody leapt to their feet standing ovation, great performance by Moses Goods.
I really wanted to see that show.
I mean, but there was nothing I could do about it.
So if you find yourself in a situation where you waited a little bit too long,
my best suggestion for you are two excellent options,
which is the games of foot over in Kihei,
kind of flying a little under the radar with the larger scale shows all week.
And then of course, if you want to stay on the West Side,
check out Rick Scheidemann, Dylan Thomas, Charles Christmas in Wales.
Absolutely.
And I believe that we have that clip ready right now.
Now we chamber orchestra.
Dylan, would you please play that clip?
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Wow.
Well, that was a real treat.
Yeah.
And like eight whole minutes they're at.
I didn't have time to go down and have a hamburger and come on back.
It was really good.
No, I wouldn't do that because I'd miss the show.
That was the Maui Chamber Orchestra from their Christmas concert last year,
performing Box Christmas Oratorio,
and Maestro Bob Wills conducting with the Maui Masterworks Choral
in performance as well.
And they will be returning this year with the performance
at 7.30 p.m. Saturday, December 17, 3 p.m. Sunday, December 18
at the historic E.L. Theatre, the Christmas concert,
considerably more popular,
so you might want to get tickets in advance.
Is that the chorale ranch?
No, no.
No.
They just use that.
Okay.
That Euro term instead of chorus or choir.
Yeah, and choir within.
So if you want to get tickets,
you can get them at MauiOnStage.com
or call Box Office Judy at 242-6969.
Also, in the music world,
there's a number of free concerts happening,
performances by the Baldwin Music Program.
So we have 7 p.m. Friday night at the Queen Manu Center.
That's the concert band.
The Chamber Chorus with the blue orchestra.
The first one was tomorrow, right?
Yes.
December 6, yeah.
By the time this show airs, that concert will be over.
I see it again.
So I jumped right to December 9.
December 13, 7 p.m. That's a Tuesday,
right there at the Baldwin High School Auditorium.
And then finally, they'll be at the Maui Mall at 6.30 p.m.
on December 30, and that is the Simbonic Band.
So you could actually incorporate some shopping
on Friday night, or let's see,
the 20th would be a Tuesday night
at either Queen Manu or the Maui Mall,
and have like a little diversion
and enjoy the Baldwin High School music.
Yeah, as you're walking around inside the mall
and stuff like that, you can hear in it everywhere.
Exactly.
So that's happening, but then happening this weekend
and the subject, the lead of my column coming out on Thursday
is the semi-annual Nutcracker Suites in performance.
There are two of those.
7 p.m. Saturday, December 10,
and then a second one, 3 p.m. Sunday, December 11
in Castle Theater at the MacMauiArts.org.
Over 150 dancers in performance.
So you can imagine that those tickets
can be snapped up pretty quickly.
Oh, yeah.
And I mentioned that in the column
that it can be a tough ticket
simply because of Friends and Family.
So it's an abbreviated version,
which is great if you want to take like,
say, a seven-year-old to see
Nutcracker for the very first time.
It's not going to be a three-hour ballet.
And then they're calling it Nutcracker Suites.
They're not calling it, you know.
The Nutcracker Suites.
So whether you're introducing a child
to the magic of the story for the first time
or honoring an annual holiday tradition
of seeing the beloved ballet, Nutcracker Suites,
is a must-see event this holiday season
and the two performances only.
Spectacle features all of the grandeur
and theatrical effects that only the Castle Theater
can offer.
So it's recorded music.
It's not the full concert,
but you have, you know,
immensely talented teenagers
that have been dancing for, say, 10 years.
And then you have people that pop up
every once in a while,
like Jerry Iding may be playing a character.
That is Jerry Iding.
I was waiting to say that Jerry Iding was in it, yeah.
And then, of course, the big awe factor
is when the four-year-olds come running out.
Oh, yeah.
These sugar plump fairies or whatever it might be.
They are incredibly cute.
So we should let everybody know
this is one of the few shows happening
where there are discounted tickets for children,
which makes it easier if you want to take a group of kids.
Take a bunch of little kids, yeah.
It's not the seat.
It's a seat business as usual
at most of the theaters on Maui.
So, again, this Saturday, 7 p.m.
and then, again, at 3 p.m. Sunday
in Castle Theater at the MacMauiArts.org
if you want to get tickets for that,
neglected to start off by saying
that this is a production
by the Maui Academy of Performing Arts,
but it is at the Mac.
We have another clip right now.
If you would, gentlemen, please roll that clip
and make it sweet.
Well, just a little tease,
but it definitely can wet your appetite.
It's going to be oh, so normal.
This weekend, normally, yeah.
Two performances, 7 p.m. on Saturday, 3 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets available at MauiArts.org.
Also happening at the Mac
is the first light Academy Screening.
So, it's extension of the Maui Film Festival.
I'm going to be checking out La La Land on December 13th.
So, that's before we meet again.
A couple of other ones happening on the 13th.
My Life as a Zucchini,
winner of the grand prize at the world-renowned
Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France
called Lovingly Told and Gorgeously Rendered
by the Hollywood Reporter This Tale
tells the story of a young boy
learning to trust and love as he searches for a new family.
So, that's happening at 3 p.m. La La Land,
which is the modern-day LA musical,
kind of an homage to old MGM musicals.
So, that's at 7 p.m.
But before La La Land is the Music of Strangers
at 5 p.m.
Several months ago, we talked about the film
Twenty Feet from Stardom, the backup singer
that I performed with dozens of bands,
most notably The Rolling Stones.
This is the same director, Morgan Neville,
who delivers another extraordinary music documentary
in the story of renowned international music collective
created by legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma
as he explores, basically travels all over the world,
the power of music to preserve tradition,
shape, culture, evolution,
and inspire hope around the world.
So, what they do is they go to just random places,
imagine Yo-Yo Ma, and just play with street musicians,
and it's all captured on film.
So, I think we have a great clip to show of that,
and then there will be more screenings on the 20th,
and perhaps we'll have somebody from the festival
joining us next week to talk about the tail end
of the festival, which goes after Christmas.
Yeah, well, that would be interesting, yeah, absolutely.
All right, well, in that case,
let's go ahead and roll that clip.
The clearest reason for music, for culture
is it gives us meaning.
We started as an idea,
a group of musicians getting together
and seeing what might happen when strangers meet.
We scoured from Venice to Istanbul,
Central Asia, China, and Mongolia,
looking for incredible talent.
American orchestra, that's very interesting.
This was like the Manhattan Project of Music.
No one knew what was going to happen.
I knew there was going to be naysayers.
You're taking this traditional music,
mixing it together and diluting these traditions.
Art is about opening up to possibility,
possibility links to hope.
We all need hope.
I'm always trying to figure out how I fit in the world,
which I think is something that I share with
seven billion other people.
Since I left Syria, I found myself
experiencing emotions far more complex.
Like, can a piece of music stop a bullet?
In 1966, the total revolution,
my parents asked me to learn music to escape.
In Iran, the revolution, chaos, I had to leave.
By trying to kill the human spirit,
the answer of the human spirit is to revenge with beauty.
I think the challenge is keeping your roots alive.
That's a new way of thinking about music,
about what people can do together.
There's no east or west, it's just a globe.
We don't speak perfect English,
we're perfect Chinese, we're perfect Persian,
but we speak perfect music language.
Being part of this experiment
makes me understand what it means to be alive.
Everybody is afraid,
but you make a connection to another human being.
You can turn fear into joy.
This is a really interesting concept,
the music of strangers,
just plopping down there and playing it out.
I mentioned that they probably discovered
some really talented people.
I'm sure they did.
That's going to be a screening at 5.30pm,
that's going to be Tuesday, December 13th,
before we meet again.
You can see a full list of all the films,
the flyers are now all over the island,
but you can just visit MauiFilmFestival.com
and watch clips for every single movie that will be screened.
Next week we'll get into more detail about other films
that will be happening between December 20th
and then that continues all the way through the 28th
at the Castle Theatre at the Mac.
We've got also at the Mac this Friday night,
Joe Coy, 7.30pm Friday, December 9th
in Castle Theatre at the Mac,
always you can visit MauiArts.org to get tickets.
Joe Coy has come a long way from his modest beginnings
as a Las Vegas coffee house comic.
He is now selling out clubs across the nation
and has appeared in over 100 episodes of Chelsea Lately,
which is where I mostly know him from.
He had the opportunity, lifetime to perform on the Tonight Show
with Jay Leno 11 years ago
and became one of the few comedians to ever receive
a standing ovation.
He's also had several Comedy Central specials.
He's right on that edge of our rated,
so I didn't have a good clip that we would be able to show.
It sounds like a little bit over the edge.
Just a forewarning that a lot of these events
that are coming up somewhere appropriate for children,
some are not.
They weren't even appropriate for adults.
The next one though that is happening is going to be
the 21st as far as comedians coming to Maui.
That's Jim Gaffigan.
He has put in all his material that this performance
is appropriate for all ages.
You can absolutely bring your kids to Jim Gaffigan.
I'm going to be interviewing him this week.
Not too long ago on Bill Maher's show.
It was hilarious.
He's so funny.
The food and his kids and basic everyday life observations.
So funny.
That's an 8 p.m. performance.
Let's see, that would be Wednesday, December 21st
in Castle Theater at the Mac.
That is one of those shows that is not sold out
but limited seating available.
So get your tickets right away if you haven't already
to go see Jim Gaffigan.
Don't hem and haw that you're up in the third level
because that's probably what's left.
Just be happy that you're one of the few that got in there.
Those are the cheap seats.
I can't see really honestly, can't see how being
another 60 feet closer to some comedian's face.
I mean, what's he going to do?
It's so funny that I got to be 3 inches away from his face.
It's what he's saying. It's funny.
Absolutely.
So that's happening next week.
We'll talk about it again next week.
And then something coming up that we'll be talking about
more of in the future is William Shadner is returning
and he's going to be...
Speaking of a comedian.
His performance at the E.L. Theatre on December 30th
could be a fun New Year's event.
It is a pricier event, considerably pricier than most
of the ones that we've been talking about.
But there are cheaper seats towards the back of the E.L. Theatre
and he will be in performance with Brian Evans
as well as a number of local comedians.
Brian is a unique human being.
He is.
And we have some important news that I'll share in a moment here.
But I want to let everybody know that when you go see
William Shadner, he's going to do probably a half an hour
or so of Q&A, answering questions from the audience.
He does a lot of funny stories through just a life of show business.
He's 85 years old now.
So, you know, you should enjoy the opportunity...
Brian Evans is 85 years old?
Oh, William Shadner.
Enjoy the opportunity to check him out
because I'm not sure how many more times he's going to want
to come over here and perform.
And then he does his silly songs alongside Brian Evans and others.
So, William Shadner, December 30th,
you can get tickets by visiting MauiOnStage.com.
You can also purchase extra tickets for a meet and greet
with William Shadner.
Those are also quite pricey though.
And now, what else is the extra surprise?
The big news that Brian said that you and I could share first
on our program is that Brian Evans is running for Congress
to represent the United States Congress
to represent the state of Hawaii.
Under the platform of opening hospitals in Lahaina and Kihei,
and he says he will donate his entire salary to Maui Charities,
and then once the hospitals are built,
he will retire from Congress.
Okay, well, maybe I'll run too.
You know, I might be free just then
and make it easier on him to beat me.
So, this is a brand new video that Brian made,
a cover of an old Dolly Parton song,
Here We Come Again,
and look for the surprise bartender at the end, Joel.
And you see this frozen man?
He's going to say, roll that clip!
Here you come again
Just when I've begun to get myself together
You waltz right in the door
Just like you've done before
And wrap my heart around your little finger
Here you come again
Just when I'm about to make it work without you
You look into my eyes
And lie those pretty lies
And pretty soon I'm wondering
How I came to doubt you
All you gotta do
Is smile and smile
And beg all my defenses
Just leave it up to you
And in a little while
You're messing up my mind
And filling up my senses
Here you come again
Looking better than the body has arrived to
And shaken me up so
That all I really know
Is here you come again
And here I go
All you gotta do
Is smile and smile
And beg all my defenses
Just leave it up to you
And in a little while
You're messing up my mind
And filling up my senses
Here you come again
Looking better than the body has arrived to
And shaken me up so
That all I really know
Is here you come again
And here I go
Here you come again
Here you come again
Here you come again
Here I go
And here I go
And here I go
Well, now, correct me if I'm wrong,
But was that William Shatner
I saw moonlighting in the bar
Trying to raise up an airplane
And fly to Hawaii
You need to get a cameo in Brian's next video
Me and dog could be hanging out
Those are all his buddies
Those are Brian Evans' posse, so to speak
And Brian Evans, of course,
Opening for William Shatner,
Who will be performing
And I use that term kind of loosely
We will be performing something
It's kind of like stand-up comedy
It's kind of like improv
It's storytelling
It's fun, though
It's a show that's about nothing
And so you can check out
William Shatner on December 30
At the historic E.L. Theatre
And purchase tickets by visiting
MauiAndStage.com
I'm pretty sure all of those people
That you just saw in the video
Will be there that night
Will be there, yeah
And then
We'll put them down in a concession sale
There's a list of, I think there's
Seven or eight local comedians
They'll be doing like 10, 15-minute sets
And a lot of that's still TBA
And then, of course, Brian Evans
Will perform before William Shatner
As well as with William Shatner
On some of his songs
And, you know, he does
William Shatner does a mean bohemian rhapsody
Maybe he'll have that ready to go
A mean bohemian rhapsody
On December 30
Some other events coming up
We have Home for the Holidays
Oh, yeah
Deborah Lynn will be doing a Christmas concert
With friends
And that's December 22
That's December 22
Maybe we can talk to her
Thursday night
And some of the people performing
Will be Alexis Descoulias
Steven Descoulias
Vinnie Lenards
Leanna Locke
Lisa Paulson, who's currently in
Mary Poppins
Karen Stavish
Robert E. Wills
The singer as well as being
The conductor of the Maui Chamber Orchestra
And Maui Madrigals
It's a pretty good crew they got there
Yes, so this is a very affordably priced
Standard price to see a show
At the E.L. Theatre
Same thing for Mary Poppins
And William Shatner just visit
MauiOnStage.com
We also have a
Oh No
Happening
Oh No
Before we meet again
On Monday the 12th
At the E.L. Theatre
This is going to be two one acts
One is an original play
Written by Francis Tawa
Who's also in Mary Poppins
Called Dream
And the second one is a play
By Catherine Snodgrass
Directed by Laura Cole
Called Haiku
And it's about an autistic man
Not unlike when we were talking about
Flowers for Algernon
One month ago
Whenever that was
That has this uncanny
Savant ability to write
Beautiful Haikus
And poetry
So you can check out both of those
For free
That's going to be 6.30 p.m.
On Monday the 12th
December 12th
At the historic E.L. Theatre
The Jimi Hendrix annual
Birthday concerts
Will be happening this weekend
Saturday December 10th
At 9 p.m.
Electric Church Maui's
Annual tribute to Jimi Hendrix
For his 74th birthday bash
And 60's costume party
And this is going to be
At Threes Bar and Grill
At Kihei
More than 30 of the
Island's hottest blues rock
Musicians fundraiser
Is for the Music for Life
Program
Which they have done in the past
Which offers free music classes
For disadvantaged children
Very affordable ticket prices
Also a great cause
You can get tickets directly
At Threes
At Request Music
Bounty Music
Lahina Music
Or the Little Tibet Shop
In Makawau
Is this Saturday night
Coming up a show
That I think is going to be
A lot of fun
Streetlight Cadence
They're making all these
Great Christmas videos
They put out a new one every week
7.30 p.m. Friday December 16th
At the Mac
And we'll talk more about them
When we return
I think we have a little clip
Of that
Streetlight Cadence Christmas
Yeah, if you could
Please run that clip
A one, a two
Music
Oh, little town
Of Bethlehem
How still we see the light
Above the deep and dreamless
Leaves of silent stars
And by the dead
In the dark streets
Shining the everlasting light
The hopes and fears
Of all the years
Already in need tonight
Oh, Christ is born
A Mary
And gathered all love
While one will sleep
The angels keep their watch
Of wandering love
Oh, morning stars together
Proclaim thy holy birth
And praise the single God
Our King and Beast
Music
Oh, little town
Of Bethlehem
How still we see the light
Above the deep and dreamless
Leaves of silent stars
And by the dead
In the dark streets
Shining the everlasting light
The hopes and fears
Of all the years
Already in need tonight
Already in need tonight
Already in need tonight
Hey, and we're back
That was quick
Yeah, they're great
Yeah, they are
And if you go to YouTube
Or just a Google search
Search Street Light Cadence
They put out a brand new
Christmas video every week
So they are not
They do other songs too
Yeah
But I'm sure they're going to
Incorporate a lot of Christmas music
When they're here on Maui to perform
They do Christmas dance
7.30 p.m.
Friday, December 16th
In the McCoy Studio Theater at the Mac
Tickets for all Mac shows
MauiArts.org
Street Light Cadence is a four-piece
Alternative folk pop band
That started on the streets
Of historic Waikiki
Not unlike the Yo-Yo Ma film
That we screened earlier
Street Musicians
What began as a means to play
For groceries has now turned
Into a full-time career
For this group of friends
The band has spent the last
Six years honoring their craft
As songwriters and entertainers
Although they come from a
Straight, classical background
Of musical performance
The men of Street Light Cadence
Anything but your typical quartet
Driven by their infectious
Story-telling and whimsy
Street Light Cadence was
Honored as Hawaii's best
A wahoo, I should say
Best group of the year
Street Light Cadence is the most
Refreshing breeze to hit our shores
In years this ensemble
Offers unconventional instrumentation
Served with warm, engaging ambience
And that is from the
Honolulu Star Advertiser
So an up-and-coming young band
That you can check out next Friday night
At the McCoy Studio Theater
Well, I mean...
And coming up?
Maybe unknown on Maui
Because I had never heard of them
Until I found out they were coming to Maui
A bunch of free things you can do, Joel
Provided that you have cable television
But if you're watching us right now
Then you probably do
On Wednesday I will be watching
The live broadcast of Hairspray
And the return of Harvey Pryorstein
As Edna Turnblatt
Like a major network station
Yeah, so it's 7 p.m. on NBC
It should be a fantastic
All-Star production
And another fun one also on NBC
This isn't until Wednesday the 20th
So a couple weeks away
Tony Bennett's 90th birthday party concert
And it is an all-star gala
Like you've never heard of before
And we'll talk more about that in the future
But some great entertainment
And the screens on the stages
And just at home on TV
At Christmastime
Everything, everywhere
It's all around us
It's in the air
I really enjoyed the Christmas episode
That we did last year
Showing old clips from the past
I'm trying to put a few together
And finding some obscure past Christmas shows
That I think people will love seeing
Just to recap what's happening this weekend
We'll talk about what's happening next weekend
Next week
Last chance to see Mary Poppins
A Broadway musical
7.30 p.m. performances
Friday and Saturday
Don't miss it
2 p.m. Saturday
And then 3 p.m. Sunday
As we started off saying
Just because I say limited seating
Or seats are almost gone
Doesn't mean it's sold out
It means get there soon
Means the tickets are in the back
And there may only be a smattering of them
8 or 10 or 15
But they're still available
And also Games of Foot is it?
Games of Foot is an excellent opportunity
If maybe you are a last-minute shopper
And we're not able to get the tickets
That you wanted to get
To the show you want to see
That's happening 7.30 p.m. this Thursday
Through Saturday
3 p.m. Sunday
But then continuing next week
All the way through December 18
At the Pro Arts Playhouse
They're also going to be having auditions
On the 19th for their upcoming play
The Cemetery Club
So if you're thinking about auditioning
For something
Just visit their brand new website
ProArtsMowey.com
The Cemetery Club
Dick Vedderley has done a great job
Taking over for the late Jonathan Layman
I loved this production
I think everybody will enjoy it
It's funny, but it works as a mystery
It fooled me
I didn't understand
Guess where it was going
Really entertaining
Check it out
And again visit ProArtsMowey.com
For more information
And auditions?
That would be
Let's see
That would be Monday the 19th
And if you go check out
Games of Foot
Just ask
What are they?
Mr. Vedderley
Can I audition?
And what are the details?
You can find all the information
On their website
Nutcracker Sweets
Also this weekend
7 p.m. Saturday December 10
3 p.m. Sunday December 11
In Castle Theater at the Mac
Joe Coy also at the Mac
7.30 p.m. Friday December 9
In Castle Theater
A lot of people probably know him
From Chelsea Lately
Which is where I'm most familiar
With him
Kind of an R-rated comedian
Not appropriate for children
At the Mac
MoweyArts.org
For all the Mac shows
What else do we have happening
This weekend?
We talked a little bit about
Rick Scheidemann
His final performance
Dylan Thomas
Child Christmas in Wales
Of this season
He'll be back in the first part
Of next year
Child's Christmas in Wales
December 11
That's a Sunday 6.30 p.m.
You can get tickets at the door
But it is crowded in Lahaina
This is at the Pioneer in
Courtyard
So I would advise calling
303-507-0987
To make sure that you do have
Tickets
And as someone that's been
To a lot of his shows
Good idea to get there
About an hour early
If you want to do dinner
In a show
Because it will be crowded
And busy
Yeah, and then of course
There's the Academy showings
And there's the map
Is netcracker suite
And we have
I just touched upon earlier
The Jimi Hendrix tribute concert
For his 74th birthday bash
That's happening at 3 p.m.
At 9 p.m. Saturday
December 10th
That's great
Okay, and well
You know who else's birthday
Is coming up?
Frank Sinatra
Frank Sinatra
Oh, he wanted to be like me
There's no event that's
Celebrating that
But you can pop out your CDs
And enjoy your own special
Birthday tribute to Frank
Well, thanks, Michael
And thank you, Frank
Whatever's going on with you
Right now
And thank you, Brian Evans
And Shatner
And everybody
That's filling up the stage
When we're out here
Lots of great stuff to go to
This is what's going on
We'll be back with another
Show next week
Happy holidays, everybody
Happy holidays
Aloha
