My personal experience doing different things with J.B.
is just being able to pronounce her numbers and identify what the number is when it gets
past 10.
And by doing numbers work and how they introduce it to me in a game format has really helped
her and me too.
Math is really one of my favorite subjects and it has helped me connect more with my
daughter on a learning level.
Oh my goodness, we ate four cookies together.
One of the great divides between persons living in poverty and not living in poverty is both
math and technology.
Today he was going to make some apples and pomegranate today and he said he got two apples.
When numbers works came along it was a perfect marriage for us and really saw it as enhancing
the Head Start classroom to focus in on that area that appears to be a really large need
for our children.
And the kids are really enjoying it, they're doing like measuring, they are using rulers,
they even do the kids, we measure ourselves and it's just great.
So now everything we do every day is all about numbers and they really enjoy it and I can
see a great improvement in each kid in the room that grows.
Math experts have learned that there's so many skills in early childhood that are built
at that stage of life and prepare children for doing higher level or more complex math
activities.
When we did an initial assessment earlier in the year where kids fell back on was understanding
patterns and mathematical patterns are pre-algebra skills and so most of the kids didn't understand
patterns.
And now you see kids, they'll be playing with materials and you know, I know this pattern
red, blue, red, blue, red, blue, the next one I need to put down is red.
And that seems really simple but it is pre-algebra and they get more complex and they learn three
color patterns and this is not to be confused with making beautiful designs, these are mathematical
patterns.
So teachers have learned that this is math too and this is important and gets them ready
for other activities when they get older.
Through the funding of Numbers Works we've been able to hire math coaches.
Those coaches are trained in the specific curriculum for providing math, learning to
young children and that's an addition to our classroom.
So they add to our classroom, it's an additional person in the classroom as well as an additional
curriculum, games, fun and learning that has all been enhancing what it is we are ready
to.
Which one is Amp?
Four and yours is what?
Amp.
It's just been three months since I first assessed the children and Jay Viana increased
her score by 50%.
So that's phenomenal and we're seeing success with all the children.
It's very encouraging and very exciting.
