My name's Mal Chadwick, I'm a designer maker, I'm an illustrator and I basically create things.
I work from a home studio, which is very convenient, it's only like about 10 steps from the house door.
I love to do different things in my work, so screen printing is a great process for this.
I have a few different areas in my studio which help me to do different parts of the process.
A place where I do all my burning, I have some good shelving units which can store screens, store ink.
I've recently made some giant pegboards, they were a bit of a feat to make,
but I'm so glad I've made them because now the house is all of my kind of little knickknacks
and masking tape and scissors and squeegees and it just makes me feel like the space is a bit more organised
and I know where things are and I can get to them easily.
I love printing on fabric in a limited colour palette so I've just been using gold, black.
Brints look so vibrant, I make a collection of screen printed accessories and homewares
like pencil, cases, bags, pots, cushions.
Basically all with like modern graphic prints which have all been designed by myself
and then printed and then sewn, so I oversee the whole process
and it just really is exciting for me to see something that wasn't there actually exist.
Sometimes it takes a while to get going on things and I might have an idea that's been going around in my head for a long time
and just trying to get it out of my head and onto paper, sometimes be a bit of a chore.
I often find that if I just keep going and give myself time to actually make and create, it does come out
and I think there's something to be said for just persevering with something to keep going
and seeing something through to the end because there's an immense satisfaction
and when you actually have created something and you can see it actually physically in front of you.
I find that if I need to just get out of my head space I go for a walk.
Once I'm like out in the countryside my mind kind of clears and I'm not thinking about work
or what I should be making or doing so my mind relaxes and then actually I'm a lot fresher when I come back to work
and I can see things with new eyes and that really, really helps.
So I would encourage you whatever you do to relax go and do it because it will really help you.
you
