Music
Dirt and steel are all that's left to you
Shifting through this broken land
I've been searching for the reason
Why these times are empty now
Maybe greed finally took this over
And the good Lord started shutting it down
Well I don't know why he saved me
But I'm stuck here coming around
Music
I started doing boards back in when I was in high school
And I ran a Dewey Weber shaping machine
Back in 64-65
And I had an offer to learn how to shape
Even more through the Overland Brothers
And basically that's where it really started
With Tom and Jim Overland
They were kind of my mentors
They were the ones who got me on the Weber team
And who surfed really extremely well
Back at that time period
We were on the Weber team
When I was doing my whole high school period
Music
Vince Coyer, who was kind of the pioneer
Of the really professional surfing of Santa Cruz
And then Richard Smith
Took it to another level
And Anthony Rufa was a writer at one time
In his younger time period
And Jake Wormhout
I had a little bit of everybody at one time
You know, I've had Barney
You know, I had quite a few
I actually had just about everybody
Back in the early 70s
And then more board builders came in
You know, people went to different directions
But one time I had pretty much everybody
That's the early 70s
And that's my best cut back then
Nobody could do that at that time period
When you add more fun to your surfing
That's a good ingredient
Fun is the essence of what it really is
I basically designed that fun
Evolution's Fun Surfboard
Board that you can have at early entry
You know, you can do good cut backs
You can do off-lips
You can walk the board
You can hang five, ride the nose
It's kind of a gambit
A whole thing of a longboard
And shortboard in one
That gives me the
This ability that I need to get into a wave
And that early entry is huge
If you get behind it
You're always playing catch up
But if you get in early
And you're comfortable
You stand up
You feel solid, good base
And then you ride
And it's still back to the fun thing
I grew up on a longboard
And went to the Evolution
The complete surfboard from short
From balsa wood to foam
To short to long
There's a combination of my Evolution board
I have actually
A lot of the shortboard
Basically a shortboard bottom and rail
With the basic longboard outline
But I still have that longboard
A tendency because I grew up on a longboard
In a Weber competition game
And being a professional at that time
And still want to incorporate
What I had on a longboard
And still incorporate on my shortboard
So it would be like a combination of both boards
A bunch of movie stars from Hollywood
And I would let those guys use the board
This is my fun board
And next thing I know
One guy, can I use your board?
And the other guy, no
Can I use it?
And then the guy takes the board
And the other guy
Run it down the beach after him
And then they drop the board
And they start slugging each other in the arm
Because actors don't hit each other in the face
But they're out there
Punching each other in the arm
Going, no, I'm taking it
No, you take it
But it was funny
But it was hilarious
Every time I go to El Salvador
I sell way more boards
Than I do in my own hometown
I get more international people
And I let them try it
And they have a good time on it
And it's been pretty damn fun
No mass production
No overseas
No Taiwan boards
I mean, that's all cool for everybody else
You know, that's not going to fit in my MO
That's not
I'm still going to traditional way
Of building board
Hand shaped
By hand
Not computer
By hand
By me
