Sister Spirit was formed in December of 1985, when some women got together with me to realize
a vision that I had had in a dream several years before.
In the dream I was walking in the forest and I came to a circle of stones by a river.
And in the circle there were some women and they were celebrating the goddess.
So I came up and I asked them who they were and they said they were Dianic Wiccans.
And I said, what's that?
And they said, that means that we celebrate the goddess as primary in our tradition.
We really focus on the goddess alone.
I asked if I could join them and I came in and we all celebrated the goddess together.
Then they said they needed to go on a trip and they asked me to guard the circle for
them.
So I said that I would.
And they left and went on their trip.
Then some other women came along and asked to use the circle.
And I said, well are you Dianic Wiccans?
And they said, no.
And one woman said she was Jewish and another said she was Christian.
And they explained that they were feminists and they wanted to celebrate the goddess using
some imagery from their traditions and from other traditions.
And I thought and I said, well, I'm not sure you can use this circle because it's a Wiccan
circle, but I'll come with you while you look for a place.
So we went on a journey all the way down the course of that river and looked at a lot of
places, but we couldn't find any place where women of those traditions could celebrate the
goddess.
So we came back to the original circle and the women who circle it was were back from
their trip and I came in and introduced the other women and I explained what we were doing
that they were looking for a place where they could celebrate the goddess in many traditions.
And I said, I think this means we're supposed to celebrate together.
And so the original women agreed with that and we all went in and had a goddess circle
together.
Later on, I thought about this dream.
I wrote it down.
I thought, wow, this is a really nice dream.
And then things began to happen to tell me that this isn't just a dream, it's something
you're supposed to do.
So then I started talking about it with some other women and in December of 1985, we had
our first sister spirit celebration and there were 46 women in that circle.
They were of those traditions and many other traditions, all celebrating the goddess and
it was wonderful.
And we've been going ever since then.
