Well, I don't know, I suppose they brought the new year in, but we were sent to bed.
We were sent to bed, and it was just one or two.
My dad, as I say, Joe Smith and Jim Sterling, they stayed just across from us,
and I don't remember how it was, I remember when their wives came in.
When the news of King George VI's death come through, that would be 1952.
What were the reactions of the residents there?
I don't really remember, because as I say, we were too young to even think of that way,
and we didn't have any, we didn't have any televisions or anything,
and the virus didn't come in at that age, the virus didn't interest us, we were too busy playing.
How did the residents in the camp celebrate the coronation?
I don't think they did, we just went up, and it was just a talk,
all the queens get the coronations a day, and that was it.
So what was the atmosphere like in the camp? Were relations among the residents cordial?
Oh aye, oh aye, I've got to say that aye.
That's one thing they did, and see phoning happened to me,
just see some happened to me, and when they were moving up the road,
say I had failed to hurt myself or something, they took me home.
Everybody's experienced a lot after everybody's wings can speak,
and the problem was that way.
Do you remember any incidents that happened?
Bad incidents? No, I know that's one thing I don't remember.
Do you remember being told any stories about the camp when it was a POW camp,
by the older folk?
No, no, see the folk that was in the camp, I don't think that when a man was here,
when there were any prisoner wars or anything like that.
So where did you go to school?
Off and like, we got a bus, a bus came doing off and like, it took us up to school,
it was the SMT, kind of, they came doing, I think it was about a penny to go in the bus,
we had to walk home.
So did all the children in the camp go to the same school?
No, they couldn't have, because there must have been cars like schools,
I brought in schools in that time, so they must have went there.
We went to high school, but I don't know where they,
maybe there were only cars like that, I don't know,
it's seen that when you're young, you don't know them, you know.
So was it mixed religion? Was there a church in the camp?
No, no, no, when these church were now was there,
and I don't even remember where a church could have been.
Did you have any special friends that you're still in touch with?
No, no, really.
The only one I remember being in school was, as I say, is Tom Callahan,
and his brother, his brother was only two that day, Clark, Clark Callahan,
we do sound a bit, that hard boy,
it was an hard boy who stayed in the first Ronald Smith,
he went away to Fife to stay, and I see Alec Parker,
I don't know where he went, obviously he got married and moved to a district
because I've never ever seen him.
It's been two or three times, just after a bit, I've never seen him.
Does a particular song remind you of your days in the camp?
No, no, is there a song, maybe a joke or memory?
Songs that were popular at the time, when you hear it and you think,
oh, I remember I was in Penelun's camp at that time.
No, no, no, really, no.
Did you have access to a television?
No, only the copy of No Hong Le.
That's the only television I've ever seen.
And where did you go to see films?
We didn't, oh no, we could go to a picture with No Hong Le, oh sorry about that.
So did you have any street parties?
No.
How did the creation of the National Health Service affect your family
because that was in 1948?
Do you remember if that made a big difference to you?
No, I don't remember, but I'll tell you what I do remember.
I had got the hooping off when it was in No Hong Le,
but I don't ever remember seeing a doctor with it today,
because I've seen me running around with the flir my hands and knees,
but I don't ever remember seeing a doctor until I got to No Hong Le.
I've no seen the one there,
and I say that but that's the only thing that ever happened to me,
and that was never No Hong Le,
but I don't remember parents with No Hong Le either.
When did you, when you heard that you had been allocated a house outside the camp,
what year would that be about?
That would be 52 or 53,
because when the timber house was built and the barberson rose,
they were brand new, we moved into them.
We knew it was happening.
We were told we were getting a house,
but we were waiting for the house to get finished,
and obviously there was a post came.
It must have been a post came because my mum used to say,
there's a post by again in a new word jet,
and she was desperate, absolutely desperate to use it.
She was over the moon, and I always remember.
I remember in the days when you had a house,
it was a boiler, a boiler in this place.
You remember that? I said to my mum,
what's that?
She said, tell me.
She said, that's a big chip.
She was winding me up.
She said, tell me, that's a big chip.
So you moved to the barberson road.
Describe how you felt when you left Penieland's camp for the last time.
I actually felt really, because as I say,
I felt everybody looking at us at that time,
and then that's when we started.
It was, I think my brother and I,
I think we had a bath a bit twice a day,
because we never knew each other.
It was just a different life.
You got your bed in the nice one bed,
and you can imagine if you stayed in the heart of the years.
I mean, it was sleeping out of the back here.
I mean, it was cold, cold, I can tell you.
Was it cold in the winter?
Oh, it was bitter, it was so.
I mean, you couldn't go turn the tap on
and wash your dishes in hot water.
It would have been better to be hit in a pan before you could wash dishes.
It was a hard life.
Don't get me wrong.
We had a lot of fun, but we were kids,
but the parents, it must have been hard work for them.
It had to be hard work for them.
I wouldn't have liked it in it,
and wrote my family up in it.
How many families were left when you moved to Barbison Road?
There were very few, because I see it at that particular time,
when the boat was moving out,
the hatch was getting demolished.
But it did too much demolish,
and two of our heads blows with a hammer,
and we're done.
There was a bar of the brickings, I say.
But is there anything left to do in there?
You've been doing it, there's nothing left.
Is it a private road to do it now?
No, you can actually go there and have a look at it.
I was going to take the wife to do it, but I said I don't know.
What did they do with the huts?
When they demolished them, did they just leave them lying,
or did they clear them away?
Well, as far as the left them lying,
and everybody went and see there was two layers of gyproc,
and there were wood in between them.
They used to do them with their hammers and everything,
and they looked at the gyproc and took the wood away to burn it in the stoves.
That's how I don't understand to this day
why the asbestos didn't they affect the folk down there,
because we used to break it up and everything,
and we used to see the ffons of the hut,
see the ffons was maybe that height,
we used to get asbestos and put it all down there,
and that's why we used to sit there,
and play and sit and have a laugh,
and we made fun out of nothing.
So when you left the camp, did you take any souvenirs with you?
No, no, no, I didn't either.
Finally, can you sum up what you think was the worst thing about Penelun's camp, 22?
The fact we're no running out of water, no heating,
the cold, the cold hut, that was the worst thing.
And as I say, I'm only talking as I was like as a wee boy,
because we didn't think that my parents would have brought my bloody neck,
because they didn't.
Because what we used to do was to go and steal the apples down there.
The orchard and everything,
I thought we used to do a hangward bloody hangard,
because folk had to go down there in these days,
and we used to even walk right up and see
where the minister's house is at the back of Allardysa's garage,
and the minister's house, I think it's the Duncan minister in it now,
we used to even steal the minister's house,
and Mr McCutcheon, that was the name of the minister,
we used to even steal his minister's house.
You see that, I was just ddiflwnt.
And can you sum up what you think are the best things about Penelans Camp 22?
The folk, the folk, I've got to say,
there were nobody you could have run down,
not because everybody, all the parents looked after other folk's kids,
if they're running with us, I say, if they're running wrong, they would.
I mean, in the, they used to be another couple,
I stayed up for Mr and Mrs Marshall,
and they had two boys, Alec Marshall and Peter Marshall,
and I see Peter Marshall here and there.
To save my mother money, Mrs Marshall used to walk up the back way
with her two boys to school,
and she used to say, send the boys out to me,
and maybe we used to walk up to the school,
and save my mum two pence a day.
Well, that's all my questions. Have I missed anything?
No, no.
Is there anything else you'd like to talk about?
