Imagine all the people living for today
Do you think this is the civil rights of your time?
Of course, we're right in it.
I always said I wanted to be transported back a little bit
because I'm a little militant by nature, so I'm in the middle of one
and it's not even just because it's our family.
We're not even fighting for any community.
It doesn't just have to be black or gay or women or things like that.
We're right in the middle of a big one.
It just so happened to be something that is close to our life
but I'm happy to be a part of it.
It sounds like you folks have a lot of support from your family,
a lot of support from your community and friends.
Have you had the other side of it?
Of course.
I came out to my family when I was about 17
and so that was like 15 years ago
and they weren't as happy then at all
and they just really wanted us to...
My mom's major thing is she wanted us to be safe
and she wanted us to be happy
and with all the hate crimes and things like that
she didn't feel the safety of it
but living in a state like this that's so liberal
and then her seeing the support in the community
she's feeling better about it.
Do you think this will provide you protection
besides obviously rights?
Is it going to provide you that kind of safety and protection?
We are going through the adoption process
even though it's like civil union
we're protected here but
we're going through the adoption process
just to make sure that if we were to go anywhere else
that she would be both of ours.
Right.
Like that's one example anyway.
Well that's fantastic.
If we had a marriage that would have been just grandfathered then
she would have even though her name's on her birth certificate
we still have to go through adoption
which is extra money and we're young and we're two women
you can kind of add that up
all these extra costs are going to affect our family.
What's it going to be like for your daughter growing up in a family unit
that has equal protection under the law?
Well she's a girl so it's just going to be less for her to complain about
she'll find something I'm sure
she may not have the right clothes but I don't want it ever to be
moms we can't do this because I have two moms
I don't want that to be a thought to her
it's like oh I have two moms
I don't know if that's two moms
and then I just want her to complain about the normal teenage stuff
her hair, clothes, friends, you know
Just being a normal family because we're no different
we aren't any different from any other family
we're just two women versus a guy and a girl
so there's no difference
Well I wish you both the best
Thank you so much
Thank you
Okay take care
Bye Kennedy
Bye
Well if there's one
If there's one
Well if there's one
If there's one
See you
