A music composer writes the synchronized music score which can be heard in the background
of a motion picture.
Hans Zimmer began his career in the movies collaborating with film composer Stanley Meyers.
Mr. Zimmer has gone on to write the film scores for such projects as The Lion King, Gladiator
and Man of Steel.
Hi, I'm Hans Zimmer.
You're watching Made in Hollywood and here's a scene from Interstellar.
Your daughter's generation will be the last to survive on Earth.
You're the best pilot we ever had.
Get out there and save the world.
You were the composer for Interstellar.
I know what a composer does, but for those who don't, how would you describe your job?
My job is to write the music for the film.
My job is to tell the bits and pieces that they can't elegantly tell in words and pictures.
My job is to let the audience in to the movie in a way that they can feel something.
My job is not to tell you what to feel.
My job is just to open a door to give you the possibility that you can feel something.
Seven.
Murph.
You have to talk to me, Murph.
Six.
I need to fix this before I go.
I have no idea when you're coming back.
Once you became a composer, did you ever feel like you needed to get formal education and
training to assist you or how did you learn more or how did you learn what you needed
to know?
You know, I never had formal education.
I mean, I had the obligatory two weeks of piano lessons before it went terribly wrong.
The thing was, you know, when you're a little kid and you're making sounds, you can't call
it music.
I mean, you're just making a racket on the piano, but you're loving it.
You know, and your mother comes to you and says, what about piano lessons?
You misunderstand what that means.
You know, I thought, oh, you know, I got all this noise in my head and somebody's going
to help me figure out how to get that into my fingers and express it.
That's not what piano teachers do at all.
They teach you how to do your skills and how to play other people's music.
And I didn't really want to do that.
And very early on, I was in a band, but really in a funny way, my journey always was that
I wanted.
I didn't want to be in a band.
I wanted to tell stories.
And that's what film allows you to do.
You know, I'm a storyteller really at heart.
Four.
Can you become a parent?
Three.
One thing that comes really clear.
Two.
And that's that you want to make sure your children feel safe.
One.
There are so many distinguished composers in this industry who have come up from underneath
you.
So you have mentored them.
What is the one piece of advice that you've always given them?
It's story.
Stick to the story like glue.
Know the story.
Story, story, story, story.
That's what you're serving.
And just figure out a way of telling it in an unexpected way.
I love you, Marv, I love you forever.
I'm coming back.
