I am my mother, I am my wife, and I'm a Kenyan woman.
My biggest strength was the women.
The men still conceive you as a trespasser.
It's been a long journey to get women where we are in terms of political gains.
For us to embrace our country, Kenya, our motherland, because it is.
We've got to bring a new thinking and a view of women.
Contesting or becoming a politician was something that was never in my mind.
I went into politics not really having planned to go into politics.
What made me get into politics is when I saw the social gap in terms of project implementation.
I felt that I wanted to speak out to people, just wanted to share out what was burning
inside me.
In our constituency, we still have women waking up at 3am to go and look for water.
And when I say look, I mean look for water because it's nonexistent.
How can I help the elderly to have a better life?
We are here because of them.
In most of the cases, my refuge was the Constitution, chapter 4, article 27, on the rights and
fundamental freedoms.
It did not matter whether you're an MP or an MCA or governor or senator, we all came
under one norm.
You must step down to the level that women understand.
I met some women, they want me to stay longer and you know it is political time, people
want you in these and these are the places where I chose to be one place at a time.
I like starting something that I feel, I have a call for it.
So I started small, I started a shop in Ghidorahi somewhere.
Now they started looking at me as the leader they wanted for the constituency.
A woman is supposed to have a heart when they come to you, maybe they have a medical issue,
medical expenses to be made, maybe somebody has been involved in an accident.
They expect a lady to come out a lot more stronger in supporting whatever the issue
is or to sort it out because they say she's a mother.
My competitors were men and the men were really looking especially when I announced
my intention to vibe with the position of the Gibraltar students.
Some of the challenges that we faced are still cultural, you know, the attitude, the barriers,
you will find that men still view women's leadership with very considered lenses, you
know.
It doesn't matter what but they will get that thing which they know is your weak point
and drum it up and blow it up and make it really big.
Then you suddenly hear someone announce they are now giving to the last speaker and you
have not been asked to speak.
So they assume you've gone to flower the meeting.
Women don't have money to fight because they don't have any security.
Are you married?
Yes.
Do you live with your husband?
Yes, and has he given you permission to contest?
I mean, I was like, wait a minute, what are they asking me?
I think it is a battle of the sexes that predates, you know, us.
I think it started with the garden of Eden but I can tell you that men cannot stand a
woman who is strong.
It stops me when I am very clear where I want to go and I have the conviction of the heart
I am unstoppable.
I am ready to try things and I always say that I would like to go to the end.
I worked hard, I came from a very difficult background, I am here today.
I like occupying big space when I come, I want to have that space but I don't want you
to give me.
I know I will create it myself.
I just said, okay, in the last parliament, I was in the speakers panel and I know I can
do it, I can control the house, so why not go for a bigger post this time?
But I will go other places, or shall I say, one other place.
It's only the presidents that interest me.
You know how proud I feel?
I feel so proud and that's what gives me the energy.
You are a mother, you are a wife, you are a leader and you want to be a successful leader.
My strength is my family.
My strength is the people I voted for.
My strength are the projects I have done on the ground.
Women should feel that they can do it.
Women, we can mount task.
As a task law, think big and never give up.
We need to get more women in parliament.
Not be nominated, let them come out.
Vote for those women.
If we do not do that, it is very likely that we are going to be an unconstitutional country
as regards the matter of gender and the elections might be declared null and void.
We are doing this documentary to encourage women, more women to stand, but also to encourage
men to elect women.
We want men to see that women are powerful leaders, they are strong leaders, they are
decisive leaders, they are focus leaders and they are leaders and they are people of integrity.
So we do hope that this very exciting and informative series will hold your attention
and encourage you to vote differently in the future, vote for a woman.
