Hi, I'm Rachel Whitaker, sportswriter at the Lake Charles American Press, and welcome
to our final prep football roundup of the year.
All three teams in the Lake area who advanced to the quarter-final round of the playoffs
were eliminated this past Friday.
I'm coming to you today from Barb, where the Bucks lost 21-12 to West Monroe on Friday
night.
The Bucks had their chances to upend the number five Rebels, but missed opportunities in the
red zone ultimately killed Barb.
Sophomore quarterback Ken Infantino threw four interceptions, two in the end zone, and two
touchdowns were called back because of penalties, ultimately leaving Barb with a nine-point loss.
Fontenot's four interceptions Friday night were more than he had in the entire regular
season when he threw only three picks and 23 touchdowns.
A piece of good news for Barb, though, is that Fontenot and fellow Sophomore wide receiver
Trey Quinn will be back for another season in 2012.
Quinn caught 11 touchdown passes and 959 receiving yards to go with Fontenot's 2,000 passing
yards in their phenomenal season.
In the class 3A quarter-finals, Jennings went toe-to-toe with number 16 Marksville at home
on Friday night, but in the end, the difference was a mere extra point as the Bulldogs fell
34-33 to Marksville.
Jennings running backs Dylan Laverne and Trey Richardson ended their high school careers
just like they performed throughout the season with almost an equal number of carries, 14
for Laverne and 13 for Richardson and two touchdowns apiece as the Bulldogs came up short.
They relied on both their offense and defense as the Bulldogs got a fumble recovery for
a touchdown to account for all their scoring.
Only though, Friday night marked the end of the longest post-season run in 10 years for
Jennings.
Finally, the game I covered Friday night was in my hometown of New Orleans when ninth-seeded
Kinder traveled to the Crescent City for the second straight week, this time to take on
top-seeded John Curtis.
Kinders often struggle to get anything going all night long against a stout John Curtis
defense that's allowed just seven points a game on average this season.
Marshall Harmon was stifled all night until he broke an 80-yard touchdown run, but in
the end the game was well in hand for John Curtis as the Patriots won 41-14, eliminating
Kinder and snapping the yellow jacket's 11-game winning streak.
After the game, Kinder head coach Jeff Wainwright told me that his team simply couldn't get
John Curtis out of its comfort zone, which is absolutely necessary in order to pull an
upset like that would have been.
And Marshall Harmon will be back for another season as he was just a junior this year in
hopes of building on his 1,800-yard performance as a junior.
After the game, he told me that he would describe the 2011 season in four words, together, hard
work and family.
