It's time, it's time again.
Chasing after empty plans
Steal my heart away
And leave me broken
My only hope is in your hands
You saved me
You set me free
Forever saving will rescue me
Forgiven
Now I will save
Forever saving will rescue me
I'll never be the same
Love is changing
Everything
You pulled me from the grave
Wrapped me in your arms
Jesus, you have won my heart
You saved me
You set me free
Forever saving will rescue me
Forgiven
Now I will save
Forever saving will rescue me
Jesus, Messiah
You rescued me
You rescued me
Mighty
Redeemer
You saved me
You saved me
You saved me
You set me free
Forever saving will rescue me
Forgiven
Now I will save
Forever saving will rescue me
Cool, my name is Jeff Gilbert and I play drums for Cutlass. I'm John Michael and I sing. My name is James and I play guitar.
And how did you come together?
We actually met in college, in 1999, and signed our record contract in 2001. And our first record came out in 2002. And since then we've been almost always on tour.
Oh really?
Full time.
Yeah, full time. We're very, very busy. And it's fun. We can travel the whole world through the United States. And you know, we can't complain. We can make music and live it.
Oh yeah, that's really good. That's always the dream.
Why do you make music? And what do you enjoy about it? And why make music?
I make music because I can't do anything else. And so, you can make coffee?
Yeah, I can always go to Starbucks to go to Starbucks if I have to. There's plenty of things I could do.
But I think we all have the same heart in music and I really think you're born with gifts that God has put into something.
And it's fun in a way and it's fun to discover those things that God has given you the ability to do.
With Cutlass, it's just one of those skills where God is here on his calling on our lives individually. And Cutlass is what brings us together.
That's what brings us together as a team. And with music, we love playing music. We love making music. We love it to grow in it.
All of us have different backgrounds and it's fun to collect ideas collectively and to bring them to our music.
But rock music is just one of those things that we all have in common. And even as we're growing now, we're moving through different styles and genres.
And it's just one of those things that God is here on his calling on our lives individually to help create the songs that you hear on the records.
I agree. I concur. Why do you make music? Why do you do it? Do I need to take this from you?
Hi. Why do I make music? For me, I just... Jeff touched on this a little bit, but I actually feel like, since I was a little kid,
it's always worked best. Like, you know, it's a good job to have this.
It's like Jeff said, this is the skill that God has put on our hearts, to go after it, to go forward, to be passionate. And so we just follow our call.
It's just one of those things that God is here on his calling on our lives.
Don't you give up now? The sun soon be shining. God face the clouds to find the silver lining.
I've seen dreams that move the mountains. Hope that doesn't ever end. Even when the sky is falling. I've seen miracles just happen.
Sight and breath get answered. Broken hearts become brand new. That's what faith can do.
What is the main topic in your current album? What are the main statements and for whom is the message?
Well, the newest record is a worship project. It's a low-price project, and so we just took a few songs from our home country, Portland, Oregon,
songs with which we grew up. Many well-known community songs that are useful in church.
We took these songs, but also wrote a few new songs. But always with the focus, very vertical and low-price oriented.
The focus was on the album, but what we hope is that people will be able to travel, or wherever they are,
and their iPod, CD players, or whatever they have, that they can pray to God wherever they are.
We hope that some of the songs are already known to you, if they also sing in your church, and that you can inspire them with some new songs on the CD.
The ultimate goal is to give people a chance to sing with them, and to praise God wherever they are.
It doesn't matter how upbeat, because you can't escape it.
It's my temptation.
It's so contagious.
There's something wrong with me inside, I'm wanting to be free.
But the more I give, the more consuming it just seems to be.
I know it's what I need to find a cure for this disease.
To save me from all of my self-deprecation.
There's still a way to clean the cell for me.
It's the rain running with the bison.
I'll take a shot, even if I bleed, as long as it can heal me.
And I'll do whatever I need, to walk and tell my name and then proceed.
Is it too late to begin and forget?
Can someone help me?
It's my temptation.
It's so contagious.
There's something wrong with me inside, I'm wanting to be free.
But the more I give, the more consuming it just seems to be.
Are you all Christians, I guess?
I hope so.
I hope so too.
What is special about your life with God and what experiences did you make with Him?
I don't know how people survive without believing in God, I guess.
I don't know how people survive without believing in God.
You know, I think it's a really depressing way to live.
And for me, in my life, the faith has carried me through so many different situations.
And I see my family and how much God has blessed our family.
And through our strong faith, we have only become part of the family we are now.
And I'm so grateful for what God has done in my life.
And you know, I have friends and people with whom I haven't grown up,
they live their lives not after the Bible.
And what they have got friends, they've got people that have got faith.
They don't go to church or follow God.
And the most I know, they live their lives without God's faith.
They don't have faith.
It's sad to see that, honestly.
It's sad, and I hope that they find peace in their lives.
And that they find Christ and their lives change.
But that doesn't mean that life with Jesus is simple.
For me, there's a life with Jesus, a definition.
It's sad to see, honestly, that it's sad.
And I hope that they find peace in their lives and that their lives will be changed.
But it doesn't mean that life's going to be easy.
But for me, having a relationship with Christ gives me a purpose to life.
It helps life to be sense.
And you know, you're not allowed to have fun.
You know, they're not allowed to do anything.
It's all the rules and the rules and the things that I've learned.
And what I've learned is that it's not about what you're allowed to do and what you're not allowed to do.
It's about what's good for you.
You say, oh, Christian, you know, everything is love.
You can do whatever you want.
And it's not everything is good for me.
And the thing is, if there's someone who knows what's good or not good for you,
then it's God who created you.
He knows the areas that are good or not good for you.
And so he puts her in front of you and says, hey, I can do whatever I want.
But what everything is expedient and everything is good for you.
And if anyone knows the things that are good and not good for you,
it'd be God who made you.
You know, he knows the things that are good and not good for you to do.
So I think that's the same thing.
One day, I have a one and a half year old daughter
and she tried to take me out of my kids in my own.
So I found myself in a very, very, very small role.
You know, the other day, I have a one and a half year old daughter
where she was just trying to get a steak from me.
And she was so fiddling with me, because I had ruined her fun.
I was like, no, no, no.
I didn't know we're two and a half years old.
You know, for sure, it wouldn't be a good idea
if she was like so mad to ruin her fun.
You know, and that sounds so simple,
but the truth is that we often say, God, I want to have fun.
I want to have fun.
And it sounds so simple in concept,
but the reality is we have a party,
and we have a car accident, we're going to be under pressure,
and so on. You know, you're going to hurt yourself.
And then she said, go, we're going to go on our own
because we said, no, I want to rest in my own way.
You know what I mean?
Like all those things that God has
and what he's going to do in our lives.
And I've experienced it myself when I look at people in my environment
and look at their lives in the faith
and the ways in which God has presented us.
They're always the happiest and the happiest people in the world.
And I hope that my life will come to an end
and I'm trying to move on.
And I hope that my life will be there
and I continue to strive to live that way.
I can run into your mountain
when your mercy sets me free.
You are my strong tower
shelter over me
beautiful and mighty
endless drinking
You are my strong tower
for trace when I'm weak
your name is true and only
and your face is all I see.
In the middle of my darkness
where you missed all my fear
the more I future in my hope
When the storm of life is raging
and the thunder's all I hear
he speaks softly to my soul
Now I'm running to your mountain
when your mercy sets me free
You are my strong tower
shelter over me
beautiful and mighty
endless drinking
You are my strong tower
for trace when I'm weak
your name is true and only
and your face is all I see.
In your face is all I see.
In your face is all I see.
Okay, so let's go back to the album.
You have a new album.
It's called The Beginning.
Yeah, also another one.
Yeah, I know.
That's my question. Why did you do this?
What is up with this compilation?
You know, there are certain things
that our label likes to do,
just to generate our album.
You know, there are some things
that our label likes to do.
Our band is trying to show
what our label wants
and many times our label
wants to put together something like that.
Also, I think the cool thing about it is
since Strong Tower and It Is Well
are so powerful low-price songs
and so are some other records.
The most records at the beginning
are rock records.
The records in the beginning
are three kind of primary rock records
and everything our label
really wanted to give our label
that they don't really know
or try to us.
Then it's a bit difficult.
We have a rock fan base
and a low-price fan base.
We still do the Christmas rock night
with these hard bands
and we feel almost at the wrong place
because we were with Casting Crowns of Tour
and play mostly softer music.
But we still love rock music.
We still do rock music.
We're playing much more mellow kind of situations,
but we hope that we can mix the two fan bases
so that they know that
both of these are what we do
and they enjoy it.
We just want to give more material
and pack it in a way
that's fun for fans.
It's a good idea.
It's two records for one price.
Yeah, it is.
Yeah, it's two CDs.
Yeah, it's a lot of music.
Yeah, it's a lot of music.
I just want people to buy
and support us with it.
Okay, we'll do that.
We'll do something more.
Thank you.
Thank you.
So far you have everything to lose
but you're dying here with me.
I believe, I believe
but you remember me.
I've been ashamed,
I've been put down.
How do you see it in your future?
More in the low price
or more in the rock direction?
I think we'll probably, that what we've been searching for and trying to do what we started to work on in our last record is not unusual.
And you know, just because we worked on our last record is a fusion.
I think musically we're more mature than we've ever been in our abilities.
You know, when bands get older, they learn to change, they grow.
I think musically we're more mature than we've ever been in our abilities, in our songwriting.
I think that's been reflected well in our last records, but ultimately, you know, it's kind of a tricky balance,
because you make your low-price record, you make your rock record, you make your low-price record, and it goes on and on.
And there are always these two things, and I think if we combine these two things and our identity is not quite a little bit,
sometimes we do this, sometimes we do that, but Catalyst is all the same, it's a combination.
And that demands that we bring something higher from both sides.
Our worst stuff is probably not going to be that much higher.
But still, the record is going to be a little bit harder and have a little bit softer elements,
and both of them are combined as hopefully a good balance.
It's just to be positive and hopefully encouraging people.
Also, it's a real hard thing to try to plan out how you're going to sound.
It's also very difficult to plan how you're going to sound.
This is one of the things that you can't constantly change.
You can't really influence it.
Music is influenced from outside, from what happens to a musician and his instrument,
from what you go through in your life and your emotions,
or other types of music that inspire you more than in the past.
So, it's definitely a hard thing to try and plan out how we're going to sound.
It's difficult to plan how you're going to sound,
but I think we come to the point in the band where we don't have to talk much about it anymore.
But if we're going to save time to meet in a room and to practice and to jam,
then it just comes out of us, and it's a lot of fun.
It just starts to come out that way.
So, it's very fun.
Good.
And at the end, maybe you can say some greetings to your fans,
directly to the left camera, you can say hi, or whatever.
Hey guys, I want to thank you so much for listening to our music.
