I
know school
great literature evokes of
vision and strong emotions inside of us.
It ignites our imagination, taking us to places we've never been.
It speaks to our hearts and challenges our minds.
And once the adventure is over, it leaves us longing for more.
Good morning Spencer, glad you could join us.
So as you can see guys in this brief overview,
romance is a common and familiar theme in literature throughout the years.
We're going to start this series by setting one of the most famous pieces of romance literature,
the Song of Songs, or Song of Solomon.
So that's it for today guys, please remember to read the first two chapters of Song of Solomon
and be ready to discuss it in class.
Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry.
It's okay, I'll be fine.
What kind of perfume are you wearing?
It's Chanel number five. Do you like it?
Yeah.
Huh?
Uh oh.
I'm so sorry.
I gotta go to brush my tie, my shoe up, bye.
Wow, that was really embarrassing.
How do you recover from that?
I just did more damage in two minutes than most guys do in ten years.
Well, look on the bright side, if someone ever makes a movie about your life,
they got plenty of material.
Shut up.
But seriously though, every time I'm around there I act like a total idiot.
Yeah, yeah pretty much.
Well I gotta go to class, so later man.
See ya.
You are like a mare that pulls one of Farrah's chariots.
Your neck is smooth and beautiful like an ivory tower.
Your head is like a crown on you.
It is as beautiful as Mount Carmel.
Your hair is as smooth as purple silk.
I'm captured by your flowing curls.
He's so good with his words.
Most guys I know treat their girlfriends like crap.
But there's something different about the way he talks to her.
It's like, it's like you can't wait to be with her.
Hmm.
Maybe some of us all in this drama will rub off on me.
So, prom's coming up.
Yeah, I know.
You gonna ask somebody?
I was thinking about asking your sister.
Dude, she's in college, she's way out of your league.
You're just afraid she might say yes.
But seriously, are you gonna ask somebody?
Like, what about Maggie?
I want to.
I can't stop thinking about her, but I suck at talking to her.
Well, you just need some practice.
Here, pretend I'm Maggie.
What?
Now, ask me to the prom.
No, Spencer, try it.
I'm not gonna do that.
Just try it.
No.
Don't be afraid.
I'm not afraid.
Come on, just do it.
No.
Spencer, ask me to the prom.
Well, I gotta go to class, so I'll see you later, man.
So, I guess that means no?
The imagery in the song of Solomon describes a man
who cherishes the beauty he finds in his bride-to-be.
Listen to the way he describes her.
It's definitely not language we would use today,
but you can tell he's really into this girl.
He says, you're so beautiful.
You please me so much.
Your head is like a crown.
It's as beautiful as Mount Gilead.
You are beautiful.
Your hair is like a flock of goats coming down from Mount Gilead.
I'm captured by your flowing curls.
Oh, your teeth is clean as a flock of sheep.
Their wool has just been clipped.
My love, among the young men,
you are like an apple tree among the trees of the forest.
Spencer, answer.
Pay attention.
Sorry, Mr. Edwards.
Are you starting to see how this book can be so misunderstood?
It just seems like a long love letter from a guy to his fiance.
Well, I actually believe that it's so much more than that.
It's really a picture of God's love for us
and his desire to be with us.
It's more like a love story between God and humanity.
Spencer, this is your last chance.
You need to ask her now.
I can't ask her now.
If you don't, somebody else will.
Besides, I've seen the way she looks at you.
But that girl's not going to go to prom with some guy
that just walks up and asks her.
It needs to be fun and exciting.
I haven't thought of anything.
You don't need that.
You're just scared.
Yeah, I am.
Okay?
I'm scared.
It doesn't have to be flashy.
It just has to come from here.
Okay.
Go get it.
There goes my chance.
Now is your chance.
Go.
I don't have a rose, let alone a cape.
Oh, who cares?
Didn't work for that guy.
Just go.
Okay.
Go.
Do it now.
One.
One.
No, don't count.
I hate when you count.
Who?
Barry.
No.
Okay, fine.
I can't do it, guys.
I'm going to say something stupid and make a fool of myself.
She's probably used to it by now.
So just go.
Hey, Maggie.
Can I talk to you?
Sure.
Okay.
So, there's the...
You?
Do you?
Me?
Okay, I'm just going to say it.
Good.
We got to get to class.
Okay.
Yeah.
Your hair is like a flock of goats.
Your teeth is like woolly fur off a sheep.
Your nose is like a mountain.
I'm sorry.
That didn't come out right.
Do you want to go to prom with me?
Yes.
Really?
You're serious?
Yes, I would love to.
Awesome.
Um, well, can I take you to class?
Sure.
Cool.
You know, you had me at...
By the way, what- I just wanted to say that.
You don't know that I need you and I can't let this go until you hear my heart's sweet.
Finally, it's like the perfect symphony.
Oh my knees, I'm asking you to breathe.
You to be my baby, baby.
I would be your sugar honey.
Girl, you drive me crazy in all the ways.
You are my baby, baby.
You and I become inseparable.
We run the world together and stop a bomb.
We make trip we made for.
But it's good to know that love heals all when the wind blows.
Just get close to me.
Close enough so I can feel you.
We were in the moment, just sneezing.
We're in perfect harmony.
And all alone, I knew that you would be.
Wow, you would be my baby, baby.
And I would be your sugar honey.
Girl, you drive me crazy in all the ways.
You are my baby, baby.
It seems that life is like a motion picture.
Baby, look, we are the stars in the sky.
Look down on the hearts that cry.
I'm full of love and I pray for a sign that only comes around.
Only comes once in a while.
Yeah, we're the lucky ones.
Oh, we're the lucky ones.
You could be my baby, baby.
And I would be your sugar honey.
Girl, you drive me crazy in all the ways.
You are my baby, baby.
Thank you for watching.
